Jon and Fishys, thank you for welcoming me. I'm reading the forums to improve the care of my fish, and I'm curious about questions such as best feeding; food varities and how best to care for a fish with flukes. But let me begin my discussion on the forum with a basic question about the ethics of supporting businesses that sell wild collected fish and corral. The two best shops in my area do a large part of their business selling wild collected specimens. My wife and I are very concerned about the potential damage to wild populations and their habitats--how do you verify that the collections are done in an ecologically sensitive manor? Thank you, Sneaker. -_-

Hi there sneaker.

I personally hate people taking fish from the wild using poor and unsustainable practices. But there are many issues to address when talking about and taking action on this subject.

Anyways, as to make sure you dont support these damaging practices you should talk to the lfs from which you purchase fish and ask to speek to there supplier. Ask them directly. I have done it in the past.

Depending where the fish are caught, different governments have different regulations regarding the capture of fish for the ornamental trade. Research the location of your fish and where your lfs obtains them from.

As for some fish such as Nemo, he is pred regularly now and most specimens you find are captive breed. Where as some species which are difficult t breed are caught in the wild. Depends on which fish really.

Hope i was a little help.

Benny

First of all, welcome to the forum. I agree that I would PREFER to keep tank bred fish, but some of them don't breed well in captivity. I think that a lot of the populations are fine, but they do go overboard at times too.

Firstly, welcome to the forums :D

Your LFS wouldn't have those wild fish if it was a danger to their species. Endangered fish are banned from being traded into the hobby :D If fish were never caught in the wild, we wouldn't have fish ;)
