Some(most) LFS will tell you what you want to hear to sell fish, i suspect this is where the "they only get 8cm" stuff comes from, Kissing Gourami are one of the largest species of Gourami besides the obvious
Giant Gourami ((Osphronemus goramy)

Their is another couple of larger gouramis, Snakeskin Gourami reach around 6-8", which is quite large considering the majority of Gourami reach less then 5"
