Why!

My lfs looked at me like i was a stark raving lunatic woman when i asked for ammonia :S

i'll ask my lfs when i come visit them again.
:hey:

Owner of a LFS store here looked at me like I was stupid when I told him my tank is cycled but has not had any fish in it.

yes its true why dont they?

I was in an lfs recently and they sold a tank and hood and filter to a couple along with fish to put in it straight away the mind boggles............ :S

Most people, and LFS employees (they don't usually have degrees in fish keeping you know) just want to get the fish set up in the tank right away, even though the tank itself should be left sitting over night to make sure there are no leaks, people do it anyways. It's the instant gratification thing.

Dead fish make LFS's money. That's the cynical way to look at it ;)

I was just going to say what fella had, yes keeps you going back buying fish, sadly.

we should put an end to all bad lfs advice and fish keeping???

join with me comrades...

Because the vast majority have absolutely no clue what fishless cycling is.

It's a lot simpler for an LFS emplyee to tell a newbie to put a couple of hardy fish in the tank for a month than to try and explain how to fishless cycle (if they know how it's done). Imagine if some moron fishless cycled the tank and kept on adding ammonia after stocking it.

i tried explaining a fishless cycle once. i gave up.

ill ask my favourite store next time im in (start of the next month to get the filter for my 47gal tank and the new eheim internal for my 20gal) if they have ammonia.

i think ultimately think though would it not be stupid. would you expect to find rat poisen at a pet store? cos ammonia in a bottle is just rat poisen for fish.

however, i will also ask for info on fishless cycling, as I know at least two people in there hacve some knowledge on it. wonder if they hav any leaflets to take away.... wishful thinking, but it may get them to thinking to support those who want to do it. or even offer the alternative so people know there is a choice.

My LFS also looked at me like I was out of my mind when I tried to explain fishless cycling. My husband had to drag me out because I was getting my heckles up a bit :p

And most of them aren't much better off at fish keeping than their customers. It's only when you find employees who have been doing it for years that you find someone with the knowledge, but most of the time, they don't last that long. As vancouver said, minimum wage.
