I brought a bag of 6 platties then added another 6 so in totaly i have 12 platties and 6 guppies. I need to get some females buy Im hoping to do it the free way and get the females from the fry I raise. Only problem is that I have only be able to have 1 bunch of fry and only one survived as she gave birth within the tank...

So I thought you might be able to help me and find out why my guppies and platties are not breeding anymore. Tey have 1 pinch of food twice a day. 12 hours light or as close as I can make it. Weekly 25% water changes. There is a angel fish (Small) and 2 opline goruamis in there with them. But they stoped breeding way before they came into the tank. Aslo 4 small albino coryes. Which have been in there with them from the start.

Guppies and platys will breed in terrible conditions, to the point where it's ridiculous. So I really doubt it's anything your doing wrong.

How long have they been in the new tank, and what's the male to female ratio? How long ago was the last time they did breed?

Also, how old are the fish (roughly how long have you had them?).

I think the most likely explanation is that they are in fact still breeding, but maybe just having small broods of fry when your not around and they are all being eaten (any of your fish will eat them, even the platys/guppies themselves).

If you really want babies, you'll have to just wait and be very observant, putting babies into a breeder net or fry tank.

Better yet just set up a small tank and put 1 male and 2 females into it, remove the male and one of the females after a week or two, add lots of cover (bushy plants like cabomba would be perfect) and wait to spot fry.

Well As long as i know its nothing to do with me so far lol...

The platties and guppies have been in the tank for a good 2 months or more. Angelfish and gourami was adding the wednesday just gone. I dont know about the platties they dont give me time to count them sorry. But the guppies are 2 females to 4 males at the moment... Last time they breed was over a month ago...

Im not sure how old they are. They were from LFS so your guess is as good as mine lol.

Fair enough I knew of this but thought some of the fry would survive as its a very planted tank. With loads of places to hide :)

Which I have been looking for and if I find any fry I will be putting them into the breeding trap.

Some fry would eventually survive (though probably not anymore with the angel and gourami unless you catch the fry as a female is giving birth), but if they are from an lfs and you've only had them for a couple of months, they are probably quite young themselves, so will have smaller batches of fry anyway, and the other fish will likely be chasing the females and eating the fry as she gives birth, which wouldn't be hard for the fish to do in a 20 gal. It would be even more of a problem if your male to female ratio isnt as good as it should be.

So it's nothing your doing wrong, this is just to be expected in this sort of setup, just give it time :).

hiya CT babe, u do need a few more females to the males! once this prob is loved, they shuld be at it like rabbits! hopefully! just need a cuple mo Females now lol! :)

Yep I knew I needed female but as mention thought I could get them from the fry I raised but looks like Im going to have to buy some... Knwo anywhere on here or shops that sell them cheap ? LFS is about £3 a guppy

Oh stop moaning. I had 2 pairs of guppies and fry for you...... However u could not be bothered to get them.

just go to a shop and buy your fish and stop looking for free stuff.

please!!!

Im not lookign for free stuff !!! Whats your problem with me. I explain to you that it wasnt my fault i have the time money and space for the fish it was my stupid mothers fault. I just dont want to pay £3 -£4 on something that doesnt have a tail coz she been niped. Looks half dead and from a crappy LFS !

If there is someone selling them Im willing to pay up to around £4 if they healthy and nice colours.

You don't understand. I have gone out of my way twice to get you stuff, including guppies.

You could not be bothered to collect them and i only wanted what i payed for them, £2 for 2 pairs and loads of fry.(what are u looking for now yes guppies again!!)
All I'm doing is informing people of this past problem and to be warned.

If you do, what you say u do, then their would not be this problem now would there!!!

I can understand doing it once but never for a seconed time. I must be stupid for letting it happen a second time!!!
Stop blaming other people as we have all seen it many times before.

Ps the guppies i had was top quality fish not nipped or half dead.

Im not blaming other people of purpose in any way atall... Im just showing the truth. The guppies or endlers what ever they were. Was my mothers fault she kept changing her mind forcing me to say no which meant you have to put them up for sale again. this I do under why you are so pissed off with etc.

The plants i swear you said a wednesday and so I didnt get a phoned call or anything from you so went into town after feeling a little better and spent the £5 for the plants on 2 fish... I thought you stiched me this is why I done this... If I had mroe money on hand I would of still took the plants off you but I havent at that time as Im owning my boyfriend £15 already.

I now have a way or earning money by selling things that is no longer needed on this forum and another. And selling the betta i rescue. Though Im making no profit from the bettas. I get £20 a week. £10 goes of my reptiles and the other £10 I havent been getting lately due to my neighbour being unwell (He is the one that give me some of the money) So I have to go out with my mates with no money, even though i might be hungry or want the bus home. I have to go without.

If I cannot make or buy the good then i will say to the person in advence but this is no longer a problem. I have 28 ponds coming on wednesday.

CT you must accept responsibility for what you do on this or any other forum. I have not been involved in any of your transactions with HelterSkelter but would take it as a personal affront if someone made a personal commitment to me here or elsewhere and then had "second thoughts" about it. A part of being a responsible fish keeper is being true to what you say or do. As I started out by saying, I am not a party to any dealings you might have but there is no substitute for integrity. Anything less makes you a poorer person for having been in that situation. I go so far as to accept responsibility for my own actions that have not resulted in what I expected because when I reread the original communication I can see how someone might have come to the conclusion that I had made a commitment that I never intended to make. There is nothing as important as your own integrity even if it seems unfair to you. It is a hard pill to swallow sometimes but anything less makes you less of a trustworthy person.
