Ok as some people know I rescued a male vt betta quite a while ago from a LFS he'd been doing wonderfully his fins had all grown back from the stumps that they were and he was brilliant, I eventually brought him home from my mum's about 2-3 months ago and had him in a 2gallon tank without filter where he would just sit about unless he wanted feeding then he would swim about to get my attention. Last week one of my other bettas died and I decided I'd move Quazi into his 10gal filtered tank with a couple of cories I look in on him and he no longer has his tail or fins intacked they are now split to high heavens, ok he's 10times more lively than before but he looks such a mess now compared to when he was in his 2gal tank. There were no fake plants or anything for him to catch his fins on in the tank and the only thing I can think that has happened is that he's been playing in the filter current. I'm tempted to put him back in his own 2gal but he seems so much happier now.

I had that problem when I got a hob filter instead of a sponge one. My VT was interested and played in the current until his poor tail was in tatters. I added Melafix for a week and his tail started growing back together and he seemed to learn his lesson. So, I'd say as long as you treat him, and after a week or two his tail starts looking better, (and of course he's still eating and active) you should be able to leave him in. Hopefully he isn't a stubbon one that insists on stressing you to no end.
