I keep reading that a DYI CO2 in a larger tank (mine is 125g) would do me no good. If I was a low tech tank, wouldn't any amount of CO2 help? I know it would not be much, but seriously, not help at all?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks!

How much co2 depends on how much light is in the tank. I use to have a chart that explained, thus you'll have to google for it.

I have 1.2 watts per gallon. (3) T5 lights over a 125g tank.

You have a low light tank then and it is not necessary to add Co2 but adding will enhance the growth.

Have read that you need at least 2 wpg to get plants to grow. What do you have growing under that low light? Of course the small tube does reflect more light than the big ones do.

I see I forgot to say you can measure co2 in tank buy testing your ph in the mourning and evening. Read that the difference is the co2 in the tank.

Perhaps they said no diy co2 because diy co2 can't be regulated. To regulate injected co2 you need a pressurized tank and regulator. They can bought for around $60 on craigslist.org Check this website out http://www.bestaquariumregulator.com/payment.html

You can also add co2 by using seachem's flourish excell. I find it cheapest on EBay.

plants can grow with any amount of light, 2WPG is reccomended for getting the more light demanding plants to grow,

DIY isnt reccomended on a large tank due to the sheer amount of bottle needed to get to the reccomended levels of 30ppm, not only is this consuming a lot of space, you have to have a ot of time to change all of them weekly to keep CO2 output constant.

the 1.2WPG will be higher (more like 1.5WPG) because you have large tank, tanks over 30g become more leanient with the rule due to the light thresh hold (explained here: http://www.rexgrigg.com/mlt.html ) Tanks less than 10g need more light.

CO2 will help with plant growth although it is not necassary, it will mean they will grow faster so more maintenance will be needed.

aaronnorth great info!! I am new to planted tanks and have made many mistakes. I try to help others from making the mistakes I have made.

Thanks you two! The forum from aaron's sig is an incredible resource for planted tanks.

oh after reading this i checked out the links in aarons thread and they are very help ful and made me consider some stuff for my 60 gallon

I visit both forums and even another one I found this morning for planted aquariums. So much info to take in. I like to see the differing opinions but it gets overwhelming at times.
