2 things I enjoy looking at in a house are a fishtank, and a fireplace. Both are relaxing. Thought perhaps that might be an analogy you could use in your speech.

u could talk along time on the bemnfits of giving these fish monetary value and thus causing people to look afyter them in e wild, i think is a very interesting toic, but that prob not primarily why we keep fish

I keep fish for the challenge of keeping them healthy and the rewards of that, beautiful, active fish that can keep me and other people entertained and amused:)

Then again, with some oddballs and catfish that stay stationary, just being able to tell that they're alive is something hard to achieve, I used to poke my banjo cats, but now I've realized that they won't move

coz my mam wont let any more furries in the house coz they make too much mess!

Because there is no other way I'd be able to have as many animals at my house.

Because they are cool!!!!

They help me relax after work.

It gives me something to learn about then bamboozle the BF with later (kinda like he does with military talk and planes and helicopters)

What other animals come in such a variety of colours. Thats one of the reasons I like platies and swordies.

How bout just learning about the animals that we share this planet with

--getting an understaning of piscean anatomy and physiology;learning socialization in animal groups (schooling, aggression, etc)

--the impact of water quality/conditions on animals that rely on it to survive

--responsibility for learning how to take care of an animal

--having a hobby

--learning compassion

--developing cognitive/science skills...mixing reagents, interpreting test results, deciding on a course of action

They kept me from moping about the house.

I had a bit of a rough year last year and my hubby suggested we take up a hobby. We'd wanted to keep fish for a while so we got a tank.
I could spend hours just sitting and watching them, they're sort of hypnotic. It's interesting seeing how different types of fish behave differently.
It's rewarding seeing how they develop and when people tell you how beautiful they are!

Because they make me happy :D Thats just a cop out.

REASONS

And also because there is an old school and new school way of thinking about everything, as seen on these forums quite reguarly. It helps people to learn from the past but also to challange it and come up with new ways of thinking and experimenting into making fishkeeping a better hobby/lifestyle.

I was born to challange. :p I don't mean to offend anyone, I just think there may be alternative answers to everything. Science is open to challenges all the time, open to new creative ways of thinking. Thats why we have the technology we have today. That's why people like us who have the environment, fish/animal welfare at heart should be forging ahead learning but challenging the past lessons learnt in fish keeping.

For example. I know alot of Betta keepers can't stand my ideas on Betta's in communities. I think and know from experience that Betta's can be peaceful and other tank mates can keep that peace back. That my female betta got very close with a male dwarf gourami and they although not compatible made very close companions. That a male and female betta can spawn in a community tank. These are things that challange a particular way of thinking in the Betta Forum, but they are valid because they worked in my experience, and not just mine, in others. Things can and will change in life, fish evolve too. :hyper:   :D

I hope I didn't offend anyone. That's just my 5c worth.

Cheers, Xan

Why not keep fish? (main reason- and I speak from experience... you move a lot. I mean, a LOT!)

But they were one of the first pets I can ever remember having, and it doesn't seem right without the mandatory fish tank. Not to mention if we had gone with my original plan of a puppy my mom would have had a cow and I would have bought the farm....

Can't be allergic to fish. They're quiet. It's something to do/achieve. It's a nice decoration. To glimpse that which is wasting away. You never have to water aquatic plants.

But most of all it's unreal to use nature as color and water as canvas.

-that fireplace analogy was really good btw.

1. It's been scientifically proven that watching a fish tank for several hours a week reduces stress.
2. They are great pets: some species interact with you when you want to but don't have a fit when you leave the house.
3. Even the least artistic people can create a reasonably good-looking tank.

BTW, That is a lovely tank, Nospherith.

One of my friends mum is realy disabled and has to be in a wheelchair practically 24/7, she's always wanted a pet but can't exactly go out a get a dog cos she can't walk it every day etc so she's been realy happy since my friend got fishas they are somthing she can look after
