Why I don't want to work at a fish store.

Also, after he leaves for the day there are some real staffing issues in the store, anybody can be pulled out of their department and even if they don't know the first thing about fish they are expected to answer customers questions and sell fish

TRUE!!!! That is exactly what happens at the wal-mart here. Even though the regular people don't know much at least they don't drop the fish on the floor. They have people come over from makeup and I stand there and watch them drop fish. Sometimes no one at all shows up so twice I've bagged em myself and written on the bag and taken them to the front and told them. Oh ya i bagged my own fish because no one would come back there. For all I know I could stand back there and kill all your fish and you wouldn't even know :D and then I do a big smile :D . Of course they don't care... they just shrug. lmao.

I would work at wal-mart to help the fish but I know I couldn't be back there all the time.

I know exactly what you mean. I tell people all the time that golfish can't live in bowls, it's a myth. I suggest a Betta but they don't listen! They say something like, "Well, I had a goldfish in a bowl when I was a kid" or "I've had fish longer than you've been alive." When I tell them they really need a 20g or more they look at me like I'm crazy! People never realize how complex and difficult having fish really is.

you should say yes u might have goldfish longer than ive been born but how many different ones have had lol i couldent work in one because id get fired for threting to drown them in the tanks lol

I sympathise with you! Working in an LFS trying to explain to people the basics when they've already made up their mind is a nightmare, as is trying to explain the concept of marine fish to people who are adamant you can just get a goldfish bowl, put in some table salt and hey presto! marine aquarium, cuz "their mate has done it"

I was actually in a fairly well known shop (not a chain) just a few days ago. I was dismayed to see the owner sell bags full of fish and a new tank all in the same transaction. The new owner had never kept fish before - I could hear from they types of questions asked. But nothing at all was mentioned about a cycle or water changeds. Bought a 10 gallon tank and heaps of fish - livebearers mostly from what I could see. The shop owner assured the buyer that the fish will be fine in the bag waiting whilst their new home is being set up. Sigh.
This is the owner of a well recognised shop and they've been in the fish business for donkey's years.......

Now that is just sad, the owner should know better!

I bought fish at wal- mart once when I was like 15 and the lady actually grabbed the fish from the net with her hand and threw it into the bag.
that was about after 10 minutes of chasing a GOLDFISH around (a lot slower than tetras)
I even asked her if she would let me catch it because I have done it many times before but she got mad and said 'I know what I'm doing!'
well obviously not.
Never bought fish from there again.

Why don't people check the dates of posts....

Really folks...It's not hard, if you had time to read the thread then surely you have enough time to look at the date :/

Surely Wal-mart don't sell fish to Under 16's? in the UK thats a criminal offence.

Before I researched into keeping Discus myself, (and still am) my lfs told me I could happily keep just 2 discus in 96l tank with tetras and corys. Found out myself what USELESS information that was.
