Why do people save feeder fish?

I think he means buying feeder goldfish to avoid them being eaten by another fish.
One of my friends recently purchased 4 from WalMart at 58 cents each, because they were pretty and she didn't want to think of them being eaten by another fish. They live in a 5 gallon tank with two fancy goldfish. ..Not proper housing in my opinion, but since her puppy just managed to smash their 20 gallon, I'm pretty sure it's only temporary.
Kind of like the whole rescuing bettas from WalMart concept.

If the "rule" is one goldfish (small) per ten gallon, then that's overstocked, but lets hope better accomodations are on their way.

And I don't think feeders are saved. They are just purchased by people that don't want to spend much on fish and who don't knwo that they shoudl not go with tropical fish.

i think the betta rescue is totally different, they aren't going to be fed to a larger fish...they just get to suffer in dirty, yucky, tiny amounts of water...all my bettas are petco or walmart rescues...

Yeah, I'm not talking about bettas so much as feeder guppies and goldfish. I just don't understand why they buy them to save them from getting eaten only to stick them in a tank that's going to just stunt them anyways.

I still have over a dozen feeder wc minnows. I asked the guy at the lfs for one dollars worth of the little buggers and he gave me about 20, they were only about a 1/4"(5mm) long. I wanted them to cycle a new tank, I figured since I was stocking the tank with Mbuna cichlids the minnows would be eaten as soon as they had done their duty. Wrong. I have minnows in every tank I own now, to spread them out. About three wereeaten by my Nimbochromis livingstonii

I have some that I didnt save on purpose ... sounds stupid, but:

I had a friend who lives out of town. She set up a turtle tank and got 2 feeder goldies and a fancy tailed calico to "clean up" after her turtle. They got big and I freaked out when I saw them living in the little puddle so she said .... well you take them then. So I didnt finish the pond in time so they are sitting in an overfiltered 10 gal tank until it gets warm. Then they will be the sole inhabitants of a 300+ gal pond. well I may add one more fancy tail.

I have a goldy as a feeder but its 4" long and in a 5g with a ac300...Normaly it lives in my 55g but it was getting beats due to breeding so im just ganna let him wait it out in the 5g i guess. He was bought as a feeder but for some reason they chose to not eat him. Ill probably give him away to my friend who has a pond

When I was 8, I would ride my bike to the pet store every weekend and buy rosy reds with my allowence to "save them" I had a 30 long and a 10 just full of rosy reds. It actually looked pretty neat and probably the cheapest tank I've ever stocked

One time I went there and they had feeder zebra danios, just itty bitty juvies and I was so upset I spent all my allowence on them :*)

I'll get right on that

I just remembered another story, that isn't so much rescusing as allowing to continue, but anyways...when my husband and I first started dating he had a tank with a school of piranhas and this one feeder goldie that was about 6 inches. For some reason they never touched him, must've been a little concerning for him to watch them eat his relatives twice a week, but nevertheless, he outlived all the p's :flex:

It's funny, the things that make us go soft hearted, isn't it?

I've saved feeder goldfish from oscars and bought one from a turtle tank at the lfs. They both turned out to be very lovely fish. If I had the room to keep goldfish, I'd do it again, if I could.
