Why do people save feeder fish?

Go Snowy Angel !

You are right they should not be feeding live rats to the snakes anyway!
After all they will take dead food anyway so it is not neccessary as it is just causing suffering.

I think the best thing the shop owner could of done is to of humanly killed them rats and then fed them to the snake.

It is ok saying to feed them less inteligent life forms but what would you condem to death?

Lets face it people are now seeing that fish are not as dumb as people presumed with their 2 second memory. Would you class them as the lowest life form?

I totally agree Guppy Dude!

Wow i feel like im on Jerry springer with all "go snowyangel!" comments, lol.
Sylvia im very glad you approve of my opinion and like my little darlings. The Tan coloured female is called Paris and the brown/white is called Rattikins(named by the b/f so dont ask  ).
Fishman, I think mice or even rats are fine since it is their natural diet IF they've been humanly put down first and frozen(like they do for disecting rodents) so the poor animal doesnt have to be hunted down, then sit slowly digesting alive by the snake. I just wish the process was different, I dont think there's a specific animal that deserves to be put in that spot b/c i dont like them. You can store way more frozen rodents than you can keeping a whole bunch of cages full of live ones.
Just for the record, I aggree about feeding feeders to fish that have nothing but live fish in their diet, but thats the only reason. If you're just buying feeders as a treat or to spoil them, spoil them buy buying them frozen blood worms(which i've found every fish loves) or something else. It will last much longer and cost less.

can we just say...that we are releasing the feeders to another species....and let nature take over???

Otherwise....the other species would die of hunger.....if snake doesn't eat rats or mice or something meaty...it would go to ????

so should we say that we also saving a life when we release the feeders???....

i know i know.....very confusing eh???

Im confused now.....
aaaaaaaaaaaaaa :look:

No, no im saying snakes can eat rats, mice whatever, just they're a much more humane way of doing it and the snake will still enoy it if its food is not moving, or atleast give the rat a fighting chance in a open area instead of in a small cage 2 inches from the snakes mouth. The snake wont enjoy that hunt anymore than the rat, so might aswell feed them pre-euthanised.
I said I do aggree with feeders for fish that NEED it in their diet. :p

that's a way to feed them by euthanising them first....hehehe.....and on top of that...the snake would love it soo much.....cause it gets high every dinner....

I personally could never get my snakes to eat anything frozen, but if you can, good for you. This wasn't meant to be a fight, I just couldn't understand people who tried to save them without having a real place to put them. I myself have bought feeders to spruce up my lines with my guppies, and sometimes when it's what you already want I see no reason why not get them. I just think it's stupid to get them for the mere fact that you're trying to save them and then stick them in tank that isn't enough for them (more goldffish here, but I've seen people end up getting small tanks just to house a feeder they saved).

If you have a snake that won't eat (frozen or live) if you "paint" the food with chicken soup they will take it better

Fishy411-at least I've moved up the fishy ladder over the years ;)

I think its better to feed live rats/mice/finches(farm raised not wild caught) the live food is part of the snakes natural diet, not dead food, its all about recreating nature for our pets. And its been proven time and time again that animals do better on live food than dead food, some say its the freshness, others say its the thrill of the hunt but however you look at it its both natural and healthy for some animals,Oscars probably shouldnt be getting many feeders, and no fish except the piscavores from northern asia should be getting goldfish (thiamine levels way to low). Some say its not natural to have an animal cornered but I say that in nature predators corner prey all the time, And I can't see how it makes a fish any different to have purchased and named it, Maybe I'm just funny that way :dunno:

If you're funny that way then we better put a clown hat on my head too.....

I have some that I didnt save on purpose ... sounds stupid, but:

I had a friend who lives out of town. She set up a turtle tank and got 2 feeder goldies and a fancy tailed calico to "clean up" after her turtle. They got big and I freaked out when I saw them living in the little puddle so she said .... well you take them then. So I didnt finish the pond in time so they are sitting in an overfiltered 10 gal tank until it gets warm. Then they will be the sole inhabitants of a 300+ gal pond. well I may add one more fancy tail.
when u say HAD do u mean u arent friends anymore
yeah .... but not cause of the fish. I try to be as diplomatic as possible. She moved to far away and I made some assenine comments that werent meant for her but she took them personally. I'm working on mending that.

Oh but if I ever buy more goldfish for the pond it will be likely to be feeders or cheap fancy tails but not for the life saving reasons. I kinda LIKE plain old goldfish instead of those stupid ones with the deformed heads and eyes.

my 2¢ worth:
Is it better to let the fish get eaten, or starve a fish that needs the feeder. Some fish eat other fish, is a gold fish more important than a Oscar.

If you save one cause it's a kewl looking fish, great, but if you save them all, others will go hungry, and, sure, you can feed hamburg to fish like Oscars, but it's not natural nor healthy. Fish that eat other fish need whats in the other fish to be healthy.
(that's more like my $2 worth I guess)
