This is my second outbreak of columnaris in 4 months. I'm a big diamond tetra fan and they seem to come down with it first. I recently bought 3 more and quarantined them and added antibacterial meds to the quarantine tank to be on the safe side.

A week later, added them to the tank and BAM. Another columnaris outbreak. Should i just stop buying from that fish store? It can't be my aquarium water, I test it all the time and all readings are 0. The last time I had an outbreak i took apart the tank and cleaned it within an inch of it's life. why, why, why do i keep having this problem? I have maracyn which i think will work in time but i bet I'll lose some fish again. It seems like every time I add a fish to my tank i get some issue to deal with. Dirty, dirty fish stores.

I have 5 diamond tetras and one checkerboard cichlid. We'll see how many remain after this latest disaster.

Are you sure you got rid of the 1st outbreak before adding the new tetras, as they would have been stressed from the move from LFS to QT tank, then to main tank and would have caught it much quicker.

Or as you say you may need to change LFS, also QT'in fish should be for 4 weeks not just one, to be absolutely sure they dont come down with anything.

Macaryn one and Macaryn two used together will be needed, also its said columnaris doesnt like lower temps, so lower it to 74-76, increase aeration in the tank as the meds will remove oxygen.

Thanks minxfishy. yeah I'm pretty sure I had the first outbreak licked. I waited almost 2 months before adding more fish. Everyone was looking fine. Noted about the temp and meds.

:-(

Outbreaks of columnaris can be caused by bad water quality, over crowding, unstable temp.
Make sure you are climatising new fish right.
Test the bag water in ph so you know how long to climatise for.

thanks Wilder,
My water is perfect, i have 5 fish in a 25 gallon (not overcrowded) and the water temp is stable. I guess the new fish got stressed out when i added them and out comes the columnaris. This is really making me look forward to restocking my tank with new fish! YAY every time i buy fish they bring some lovely disease! I guess as you said, acclimating them is the key and I don't know how to do that properly. They w ent from the store tank, to my quarantine tank, to my main tank and i guess it was too much for them.

So sick of this though.
