Ask and ye shall receive....

Neolamprologus toae is commonly found in proximity to N. tretocephalus in the lake. I find it rather unusal due to the size difference.

N. toae feeds at night or in the dim light of dusk to dawn. It has a relatively short intestine, which indicates a carnivorous diet consisting mostly of shrimp parts. Other soft invertebrates, such as insect larvae are eaten as well.

N. toae has small indentations above the upper lip and around the eyes, which are enlarged sensory pores which aid it in locating prey under subdued lighting.

Given the fact that N. tretocephalus and N. toae share the surrounding habitat, one would conclude they would be in competion for not only spawning sites, but food as well.

This is not so!! N. toae as stated feeds primarily on shrimps and occassionally on larvae, while N. tretocephalus has as it's main diet insect larvae

Breeding N. toae are normally found in shallow water where both male and female guard the offspring.

It was observed that a pair will guard their fry for up to 12 weeks before starting a new brood.

Both parents are required to care for the brood to attain a significant number of fry survive. The eggs are attached to the upper face of a small flat rock or to a verticle surface inside a small crevice or between two adjacent stones.

After about four to five days the larvae are transferred to a rocky crevice or left on the bottom of the spawning cave. A few days later the fry are free swimming and hover above the nest. Clutch sizesrange between 150 and 250 eggs.

Given the fact they enjoy a carnivorous diet, they should not be housed with smaller fish that they could see as a meal. They could probably be house4d with any of the other Neolamprologines or lamprologines with little or no trouble, given suitable space.

As for aggression, I would have to say they exhibit no more or less aggression than any of the other neo's or Lamps.

Hope this made for enjoyable reading!!

daaaaaaang CM that just about covers it,except for max size :) and availability :D

thanks for the info  i made a coby for myself

Most,

maximum total lenght (head to tail) is 10 cm or 4" there abouts.

Availability....now that's another story. N. toae is a species that's hot and cold. There are times when breeders can't keep them in stock and then there's times when breeders can't give them away!!

I am considering an order of wild caught fish with one of my overseas suppliers. N. toae is on there list. These would be close to adult size and come in pairs!!

If you are interested in adding to my order, PM me for details!!!

Keep in mind this order will not be going in for possibly a few months due to the weather here. The fish would be coming from Sweden via Lake tanganyika and will be in transit for sometime so I don't want the cold weather to cause any losses!!!!
