im doing a fishless cycle for my new tank (55 gal which is my biggest so far) and i told my mom to add ammonia to the tank
she added about about a cup of ammonia
how can i neutralize it (chemically)?
i already did a 75% water change

Do a water change and bring the ammonia back down to the leval it needs to be around 8ppm other wise it will take months to deal with that much.

Yeah just keep doing some water changes to get the ammonia down to a more reasonable lvl.. and next time, make sure she knows how much to add heh

i know, but wont such an extreme amount of ammonia kill the bacteria thats trying to eliminate it?
my test kit reads to 8.0 and its well off the scale

well bring it doewn lower than the scale so you know for sure then raise it to where you need it.

I would get as much water out as you can then refill with conditioned water. Do a test and it should be very low. Then add about 3 teaspoons and do a water test. Add a bit more as required and test again.

I don't know how far you are into your cycle right now but a complete water change will only do good in this situation :good:
