but besides that, i dont find them very attractive anyways

Got a link? there are thousands of characins, maybe you could consider cyprinids also? there are some amazingly attractive species.

as long as there are places to hide and the tank is quite large they shouldnt fight i have 2 males in a 3ft tank and they are fine together

ok cool. i have a hiding place like 3"-4" tall but its really long should i get a bigger hollow piece?
