I bought a new 83 litre tank today and it said all over the box - must only be used with proper stand , buy this stand, buy this stand etc etc.....but the stand that came with it looked rather flimsy to me and not worth the money so i used a wooden cabinet thing i have that is not for aquariums but is very sturdy and seems much more stronger than the stand they wanted me to buy. It doesnt completey support the base of the tank - the sides overhang by say an inch each side but the tank is like 24 inches long.

Is this ok do you think ? I'm hoping this wont weaken the joins of the tank. Do they just say you need to buy the right stand to get you to buy theirs ? I stood on the thing and jumoed up and down to test it !!!!

I never buy stands from the shops and build my own instead, that way i can customise the stand to suit my needs to take extra tanks and equipment underneath. IMO most of the stands that come with package tanks are overpriced junk, litterally constructed of laminated chipboard and flimsy as paper.

It's not good if the tank is not on a full surface as they have to be flat to even out the weight.

Not the tank I hope !!!
Most people will tell you that overhanging tanks are in danger of cracking. You can buy metal tank stands much more cheaply. Try Aquatics warehouse or Trimar (google them to find website).

Wait, you mean my dresser doesn't count as a proper stand? Noooooo.....

The stand must be able to take the weight of the tank. CFC, you may be able to work this out and construct the stand, most of us cannot IMO. I would not buy anything over 50g without a stand unless I was a carpenter and could do so myself. I am looking for an 8' x 2' x 2' tank now :S (with hood and stand), would not even consider getting it if it didn't have a stand and hood.

If you can supply a flat surface and polystyrene and the ability to take the weight, then ok.

Not if the tank is hanging over the sides.

I didn't like any of the stands I saw and they were to expensive. I got my hubby to make mine for about $75.00, for a custom stand that matches out TV stand almost exactly. This way, if I ever get rid of the tank I can keep the stand for other things.

ok -ive got the worries now so im emptying the tank. Do you think i could have done any damage to it - it was only overhanging as i say by about an inch each side. It sonly been filled for 7 hours. Im going to buy a proper stand and refill it. Hope its still ok.

You have probably done the right thing, just give it a check over when you have empty it fully, here is a link to a online store they sell stands.

i bought a wood table to put mine on, I would never buy the stands from the pet shops, they are way to much money and not worth it.

Our 4ft is on a coffie table  (Its a heavy built coffee table)
Our 120l (33") is on a TV stand
The 110l is on a reinforced bulkhead over the stairs.
The 50l is on my desk
the 12l is on a bed side cabinate.

So ummm nope - none of them are on their intended stands.

it the tank a bare glass construction? or does it have a plastic 'frame' that it sits on?

Our 2ft (50l) tank has the frame to spread the weight, and when we first got it we had it for about 4 months with an inch over hanging at each end.

I think youve done the right thing.

it has a plastic frame - its a 83 litre fluval duo 800 deep. Ive emptied it now. I wasnt happy with it all day so i know ive done the right thing. phew.

I got a tank & cabinet from the classic cabinet company. Really well built & looks great. Well worth the money.
