it seems that here in denver most places carry the the same varietys and limited exotic fish, im wondering if the whole US is that way and if the UK has a better selection

unless someone has seen the full selection that both countries has to offer then i dont think you can really vote on the poll.

id say the states tho jus cos of its size!

I just want to see peoples opinions and hear a little about what they think about the selection available to them

Well my local lfs has great stock and its forever changing, they always have live bearers, gouramis and tetras, but always have a different supply of everything else, I love going in there on a thursday, just to see what he has got in his new shipment. Theres always a new fish that I havent seen or heared of before, or something a little unusual. Sometimes he doesn't even know exactly they are, I bought of what we thought were diamond tetras a few years back, but will never know for sure if thats what they were, unfortunately I lost them at the begining of this year.

I don't think it's what country you are in, but what LFS you go to, I know of a few around my local area, but the others never have as much variety as the one above. I am in england.

The lfs in my town is pretty poor in pretty much every area of fish keeping, whenever i go there i always see many sick or dying fish, a pretty poor selection of fish and plants, tiny tanks with nothing above 40gals ever being offered, terrible ("bad" doesn't even describe the advise, they could not tell the difference between a male guppy and a female guppy, one of the most commonly sold fish in the hobby, and if you mention the phrase "cycling tanks" and all you get is a blank face staring at you) advise from staff.
The guy there who owns it really doesn't seem to give a cr*p about the way the place is run or what happens, he keeps on going on about selling it, although he's been saying that for over half a year now.

My other lfs called WaterMarque in a town very near me (Yeovil) is far better- as far as i know, its pretty good as far as lfs go in general. They have an excellent selection of fish, everytime i go there i always see a species of fish i've never seen before or a new color variation of a livebearer of some sort.
Sometimes they do have tanks of sick fish, but the vast majority of their fish tend to be very healthy (they've got about 60-70 tanks not including display ones)- they sell marine, brackish, freshwater, coldwater, sub-tropical and tropical fish as well as other critters like turtles and lobsters/crayfish, frogs etc.
Their staff, although not amazingly educated about fish keeping or anything, have offered good accurate and true advise in the past though (although like any situation, i still firmly believe you should do your own research before hand) and they do seem to make an effort to look after all animals very well there (as the place doesn't just sell fish, they do all kinds of exotic and everyday pets too).
Practically everything that decorates my tanks has come from Watermarque, its a really good place to find those extra large peices of drift/bogwood and mopani wood, they also sell tanks up to 6ft long and will get larger tanks if specifically asked for.
They also sell a huge amount of L.no plecs and rare cories too, as well as pond fish and pond supplies.

I can find just about any fish I want. However, I almost ever buy fish from retail outlets-lfs or lps. I buy them shipped in from all over the country.

If my lfs doesn't have something, the owner is very open to ordering something I want. (as long as it is available from his supplier) Maybe you could try talking to the staff of the lfs about a special order.

Its swings and roundabouts, some fish that we in the UK see in almost every lfs and consider fairly common like redline torpedo barbs (Puntius dennisoni) for instance are fairly rare in the US and have high price tags, but then there are fish in the US that we practically never see over here. I dont think either country has a better selection than the other, its just down to supply and demand.
If you want a real selection look at some of the far eastern sites and see what they can get their hands on in Singapore, Thailand, Japan etc; its enough to make you cry.
