Who don't have cichlids? Why?

I prefer smaller fish as they do more than just sit there looking at you. :p

BlueDSM: the do recognize me. When i go upto the tank they come upto the top because they know im the one who feeds them, when my g/f goes upto them they just look at her like "what are you looking at"
My midas hates me and my g/f but her dad can go upto him and even put his hand in the tank where as my g/f and i could not even get that close.
Puffers are really cool tho i would love to set one up, are they hard to keep and do they get big?

>>> New tank 511g 10ftx3ftx2 1/2ft New world Cichlid tank.

That's a hell of a tank that - got some pictures?

well cichlids need a LOT of room..thats y i dont keep em.and they are agressive so u have to have ONLY cichlids :(
Look at my signature and tell me they can't be kept with other fish :p
StantheBetta, Bolivian rams are hardier than the other types of ram, and they aren't anywhere near as aggressive as other cichlids.
CICHLIDS RULE!!!!

I will eventually setup a cichlid tank, but I've kept my distance due to my love of planted tanks.

im getting some little ones for my 15, because i want them and my mom decided that the only way we can get another tank is if our fish outgrow theyres, but i think my aunts getting my brother a bigger 1 4 his graduation in 2 weeks anyways.
i do have an angel fish, but theyre not that fun, or pretty.

I don't have any cichlids currently, but have had convicts, rams and a jewel in the past and loved them, especially the convict and rams. With this tank, I went in a different direction (barbs and cories) b/c I wanted more of a schooling/shoaling tank. I do have a 10g for breeding and if it doesn't work out, I've considered getting a pair of Bolivian rams and some oto cats for it :kana:

I've never had any cichlids because until recently i didn't know that there were cichlids that wouldn't tear up my plants and that were small enough for my tank. I'm now considering a pair of rams as the centerpiece if my fishless cycle will ever finish, gah! Depends on what the final water parameters are.

I don't have space.

I don't know that I'd get any even if I had loads of space though. I don't know much about them, what is it that makes them so popular?

Almost went with a pair of Leleupi once but got talked into 3 Spot Gouramis instead. Eventually I'll get some though my next tank is going to be Saltwater so Cichlids are a ways off.

i prefer cichlids over salt water fish or anything, just they way they come upto the tank to check you out, and there so smart, things they pick up on is crazy.
Agreed, I'll always keep cichlids and I'll never go salt :p Funny enough, when know-nothings come to my house they actually ask if my big tank with the fronts is a salt tank :S :look:

Many cichlids are at least territorail, other outright aggressive and some simply evil

Heh heh heh... :hey: You just made me fall in love with my midas all over again!

He is pure evil but he has such a soft side  He wuv's his mommy  and he absolutely adores my little girl. But when a new person comes in the house I always quietly crack up on the inside because they stand in my doorway to enter the room and all I can look at is the 'attack' fish, he absolutely despises new faces. If he could only get through the glass and bite them...he would!

I'll back Vip up, They recognize me distingtly you show someone else the tank and they all hide they all hide whoever wlaks in the room but i am able to coax them out and they can tell the difference between me, they have their friends in the tanks theres a dominant one and they are all scared of him and it's intresting to watch them react to him and eachy other as well as anyone who walks by the glass and although mine are shy i expect that to change once they move into a higher traffic area

They are also more colorful then alot of marine fish

I like to think i got lucky to start off with fish as great as my mbuna cichlids, and then for me the next steps include a cheap marine setup, and maybe a small puffer or betta tank

Dont really like the form or shape of most of them... although the colours are very attractive... but with 4 tanks soon to be up and running our passion for cats and plecs shows through :)

as Teelie said.. next tank will be salt... long way off though - new house first :)

My African tank is definately the most active tank that I have ever had. When my husband walks by they hide in their caves but when I do they follow me throughout the room.

I enjoy pretty much all fish, but I think I'll always have at least one cichlid tank up.

I like cichlids, it's just that I have nothing bigger than a 17g right now, which is simply too small. Maybe one day in the future though.
