Tank size: 80l
pH: 6.5
ammonia: 0ppm
nitrite: 0ppm
nitrate: 15ppm
kH: Unknown
gH: Unknown
tank temp: 25 degress

Fish Symptoms: Fish do not seem to bad at the moment, I know that they have white spot as quite a few are covered in tiny white spots, so far they have not been rubbing against any rocks etc. Two of my platies seem to have quite cramped fins but the others seem ok.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 80l tank (just under 20 gal) water is changed at least once a week but usually twice.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: The only chemical that is added is decholorantor, and the filter media is just regular filter sponges.

Tank inhabitants: 3 platies, 5 neons, 2 mollies and a female better (5 fry - 2 platy fry and 3 molly)

Recent additions to your tank: None

Exposure to chemicals: None

My main question is when should i start treating for the whitespot, I added some medicine in last night just to be on the safe side, I cannot for the life of me think what i am using just now, it is a brand called wild something and the product starts with myx and it is a dark green colour, i can check tonight when i go home but i picked this because it said it treats whitespot and does not harm the filter bacteria. I also read on here on the pinned topic that i should raise the water temp to 29 degress will all my fish be ok in this temp. Also i am a little worried about my fry, will the medicine effect them? They are only a couple of days old so still quite tiny. I done a 50% water change last night and gave the gravel a good hoover also and cleaned my filter in tank water.

Thanks

Also just wanted to add, i checked my filter media last night and all that is in my filter looks like to be black sponges thats all that came with the filter and its all that i can fit into it. Is this just all carbon sponges? The filter I have is a Elite Stingray filter. If i remove all of the carbon sponges then i will not have any sponges left in my filter and therefore wont this remove most of my bacteria and start my tank cycling again but if i leave them in this will remove all the meds i put in and wont treat the whitespot. Can anyone think of a way to get around this? Are all sponges that are black just carbon sponges or could they be a regular sponge but just black. Seems silly that Elite would just supply carbon sponges when this is known for removing meds.

This is a link if anyone would like to see the filter i am talking about, it does look as though it is just cabon media.

After looking into this further I have discovered that the spnges just seem to be black but are not carbon just regular sponges, It seems that the side buts of the stingray are actually the carbon so I am hoping that i should be able to remove these for the time being.

Hiya,

It certainly looks like carbon, in which case if your going to treat for ich, I would remove it, or it wont work.

You can raise the temp slightly - 80-82 should still be ok with those fish, but do it slowly, then add your meds. You can get alot of white spot treatments, but the blue (Meth Blue) is very very strong, I wouldnt use that if you say that its not bad at the moment. It will stain everything blue in the tank, and quite often kills weaker fish like the fry.

If you can isolate your younger fish I would, before you medicate your tank.

You can get the malachite green treatments which I would have thought should be OK (King British Ws3) or similar. just watch out that you airate the tank as much as you can whilst treating as alot increase surface tension.

Go to your local LFS and ask them for a white spot remedy. They will advise you.

Also - from my experience, the treatments can kill some filter bacteria, so keep your eye on your water stats very carefully whlist treating, and follow the manufacturers instructions.

How bad are the spots ? 10 or 100 per fish ?

There is a great topic at the top here on whitespot, :-

Thanks, I managed to get my mum to go along to the petshop and get some treatment for me since i am at work all week.

I don't have a spare tank to put the fry in as the rest are cold water and dont have heaters. I will just try not to overdose on the meds and hope for the best. I do not have a spare tank because i have had my mollys and platies for about 9weeks and never noticed fry before now so wasn't really expecting any at this stage and they are all female so cannot breed in the tank, i guess they must have had fry once before since i have had them and they have mabey been eaten if i havent noticed them.

I will do a water change when i get home and up the temp and add in the meds. My filter gives off quite a good exceloration so i should be ok with that and i have bought some oxygen tablets to add in.

There is not that many spots on my fish so far about 10-20 per fish, others just seem to have it on there tail fins.

You could try it at half dose it its not bad. You do that with loaches and others so should be ok.

If it gets worse then you can go to full. I just hope your fry survive it.
