Hello all,I recently joined this forum and was very helpfully informed by a few members on cycling my fish tank, I like many people was mislead by my local fish store and had already added my fish which seems to be becoming quite a trend for newbies after all you would think you'd be able to trust a fish store obviously I was wrong! Never the less I took my fish back and I am now performing a fishless cycle. During this I have noticed a white mucus type of layer surrounding the suckers on my heater so a few questions really a) Does anyone know what this is? b) Why has it happened? c) How do I best go about removing it? and d) How do I prevent it?

You need to host the picture on a host site like photobucket.com

when you have opened a free account and uploaded the picture to there select the IMG code below it copy it then paste it in the thread hey presto your picture should show :good:

its just harmless bacteria and algae accumulating on the suckers, you can wipe it off but it will just grow back. When my tank had it after awhile i got bored and left it to do its own thing, nothing bad ever came of it. Always remember you cannot control everything that grows in your tank!!! Now if there was white stuff on your fish thats an issue but this on your suckers is not harmful to any fish :d:D:d:D:D

One thing all newbie fish ppl do is get paranoid about every little thing. No need too just have fun :D

Thanks a lot guys! Here is the picture is this the same stuff you had?

i have that exact same heater and the exact same white stuff. looks gross but what can you do!

Yes, a lot of that is bacterial biofilms, sometimes kind of interesting for beginners to see when they're expending so much energy worrying about that same stuff growing properly in their filters. Its of course harmless and cleans easily. When I do my weekly gravel-clean-water-changes or my monthly filter maintenance I always pick out something extra to clean. It could be the lid of the tank or the outside glass or the decorations or sometimes the filter hose system and sometimes it includes suction cups like that.
