hi is it true that stress on it own can cause white spot

the whitespot parasite must be in the tank water for a fish to catch it. If the parasite isn't in the tank, the fish cannot catch/ develop it. However, stress is a common factor in whitespot appearing in a tank that already has the parasite in it.
