I have 3 polkadot laoches that have small white spots that look like salt specks. Now a few more of the baby platys seem to be getting them too.
I have been treating the tank for WS for the last 6 days and there doesn't seem to be much improvement.
I was told to treat the tank every other day with the suggested amount and to continue for 1 week. But the week is nearly over and there is no sign of improvement.

My water stats are all ok and I have turned the temperature gradually up to 28-30celcius.

Am I doing this right? is it WS?

I have read that ws can only be treated after the parasite drops off and goes to the substrate, then the process starts all again.

For the last 2 days the loaches are constantly trying to get to the top of the tank with open mouths....hence I am now really worried. I have an airstone constantly running as well as a good stream from the filter.

What can I do???? :-(
Any advise truly welcome......

Thanks in advance

Before you redose do a gravel vac helps get the parasite out of he gravel, are you running and airstone for extra aeration as it sound like the loach is struggling abit with less 02 in the water what the med takes out

Yep....running a 12" wall airstone and have done a gravel vac.
I also removed any decorations as not to allow areas for any build up.

What else can I do??? how long can i treat??? do these meds do damage to the fish?

It can take two rounds of treatment sometimes, i've only had it once and it took me whole 4 courses of treatment to get rid of it, what med are you using, parasites can be difficult to get rid off at times, sometimes it just takes longer.

I'm using a whitespot treatment by King British, it's the green stuff!!!! It was the one the LFS recommended.

fast simple way to cure ich is raising temperature+salt and a 3 days per 25% water change for a few weeks until ich goes away. I my self dont even use salt but just raising the temperature of my tank to 86 and ich disappear in a couple days. If that doesn't work for u just get super ick cure or jungle ich cure both work wonder. Read info before use. Usually with the right medicine ich should be clear in a few days. Ops forgot to mention that you should put in an airpump into the tank. During treatment temperature of ur tank will be so high that oxygen lvl will drop like mad. Thats probably why ur loaches is trying to swim to the surface because not enought oxygen intank.

DO NOT ADD SALT into your tank because of your loaches. I've also heard that these fish can't handle high temperaturs, do don't turn you tank up any higher than what you are already doing. Definately do water changes, as that will help phsically remove some of the ich.

Because there are so many possible treatments for ich, what are the active ingredients?

I agree no salt, maybe turn temp down abit if the loaches are suffering as stress wont help the situation, good luck.

The active ingredients are - Malachite green, Acriflavine & Quinine Sulphate.

With loaches did it say half dose as with mgreen, you have to half dose with these fish.

King British No 5 White Spot Control
The original and most popular fast working white spot (Ich) treatment.

Also treats other waterborne parasites including Costia and Trichodina.

Suitable for Tropical and Coldwater Aquariums and Tanks

10ml

It doesn't say half dose on loaches on the box or in the instruction.
Should I water change every other day before using the med or leave water changes until course is finished??

How long should I treat for. The leaflet with this med says that between 5-7 days the spots drop off & break up into 1,000 smaller parasites...this is when the w/s can be treated. So should I wait until they drop off????
This is all confusing....... :S

Can someone please explain what I should be doing. I wont add salt as you shouldnt with loaches (as tttnjfttt said).

If the box dosn't say half dose for loaches then it should be fine, you can do water changes but you have to add the correct amount of med back to the water removed, medicate again once the date is up but do a water change like it says to on the instructions after treatment, then just start the course again, good luck.
