Right bought some new fish from a new lfs i thought i would try. now iv got white spot in my tank. great.

have started to treat and sitting at work one thing has just occured to me.........will my snails be ok??? do i need to get them out???

What tank have you got it in?

What product are you using?

Need some more info...

Sorry forgot that, in the barb tank, noticed the white spot on one of the new albino barbs

cant remember the product name at moment though sorry...

All readings of tank are fine, have been since day one, do water change every week without fail.

I am putting it down to stress of move into new tank etc...

How did you introduce the new fish? Did you add any of the LFS water from the bag? Most probable is that the new fish carried ich, not to worry - you have spotted it!

Get your temp up to 27 - 28c (please check your fishes compatibility with this temp). Two good products are Waterlifes Protozin and Interpets White Spot treatment - don't change treatment now though

As you have a loach, I'm fairly sure you need to reduce the dosage i.e. I keep clown loaches and I have to dose 1/2 of the recommendations - this should be in the instructions.

Your snails should be fine

No never put the water in, what i do is gently put the fish into a small tub (after temp same) the with net get them out and put into tank, they all settle very well and never have problems until now i am gutted!!

my temp is at 26 now so slight increase will be ok as sometimes with temp of room it will creep up to 27/28 anyway.

Ok, will keep that in mind.

thanks :)

if the water from the LFS had something wrong with it then it would not realy matter if you add it or not the fish would still have the same thing wrong with it and would spead it in to your tank water or no water it is most likely the stress thing if all your water is ok whats your temp on ( how warm is your tank ) ?

im pritty sure with the fish you got you could turn it up a lil why you treating the tank ??? this will kill the white spot faster also the snails should be ok when i had white spot in my tank months ago i had snails and all i did was turn the temp up and put treatment in and after a week the white spot was gone and all fish are still swimming about happy today but im 99% it was the clown loaches in my tank as they was new and they get white spot easy when under stress so again it comes back to the stress thing

I'm sorry to call you out here but there is a possibility that the water from the LFS has been treated with chemicals/antibiotics to keep disease under control and that these could damage the filter balance or 'react' to the current treatment....

this will kill the white spot faster

Turning up the temperature does not kill white spot faster, it only assists in speeding up the cycle. When the 'white spot' cysts (trophonts) leave the fish they form in the substrate and multiply (approx 2000x) then burst and are released into the water as free swimming tomites - only then can the medication kill them. This usually happens 48hrs after the last white spots have been seen....

Dude, nice car by the way!

hi thats ok i understand what your saying what im trying to say is if the water had white spot in the tank or the fish was ill in the tank at the LFS then realy if you add your fish with or with out the water theres a high chance the white spot or the illness got in this way if it was not the stress or am i wrong ?

but im not saying that it is the LFS tank i would think it was more down to stress but i could be wrong

spot on there im no good at how it works just got told to put the temp up and use the treatment and it worked so just trying to say how i got rid of mine

cheers for the comment on the car mate its getting there :hyper:

I totally agree... if the fish already had the ich parasite then this would have easily transfered onto other fish and if the fish got stressed it could also happen. I added two perfectly good looking fish into one of my tanks and the clowns got ich.... All sorted now!

Right do i carry on with weekly water changes???

so far they have had 2 doses.

and as far as i can see the white marks them selves have gone

but still gonna carry on few more times.

once done do i do big water change???

do i add carbon to filter?

Hi

DO NOT put carbon back in the filter until at least 16 days after you saw the last white spot!!

I don't know what treatment you are using so cannot answer your question on dosage however you can do a water change (vacuum your substrate like mad to get rid of a load of cysts) then add chlorine conditioned water back in and add the PROPORTIONAL amount of treatment to what was taken out

Your fish will be happier now the trophonts have left but keep a close eye on them still

Post up the product and instructions...
