I have been having trouble with my 46g lately. I was stuck in a fish-in cycle and barely got my platies through it by getting some media and ending the nitrite spike. Then I waited a few weeks to make sure the filter cycled. Next I added a few fish at a time over a few weeks. All of my test results were fine!

Other then after a water change. My tap has 1.0ppm ammonia and it was taking up to 28 hours to clear completely. My cories always seemed so stressed after changes. Then I start with the Flourish excel and ferts and noticed some labored breathing. I had to do 2 water changes in 48 hours and even the tetras looked labored.

My 75g filter can clear my tap water ammonia and resulting nitrite in less then 12 hours, so we already ordered the size smaller in that filter.

Ok thats the background. I wanted to be clear that the water quality is the best of my ability. No extra food, no overload on waste, clean as the tank can be. {except ferts?}

Tank size: 46g Bowfront
PH: 7.8
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 10
kH: 7
gH: 161.1
tank temp: 82 {treating for ich, but can't go too high because of cories}

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): One cory was off in a corner for a whole day. The next day I saw one white spot on a tetra. Since then a few cories fins look slightly frayed. Slightly. A few other tetras have one or 2 spots. I thought it was ich and began a treatment since water and salt don't go with corys. Now I think it may be fungus. Doesn't ich show with multiple spots?

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 50% weekly...more if needed...going to 25% a week now since I quit the ferts and excel.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Half-dose of API Super Ich Cure

Tank inhabitants: 2 platy, 8 albino cory, 1 clown plec, 11 von rio tetra

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): plants over a few weeks

Exposure to chemicals: 0 - unknown. I rinse my arms before reaching in, and quit using lotion anymore until bedtime. {hubby will complain soon :blink: }

I'm really worried, I keep reading these things are ALL about water quality, but even with the water changing, I use Prime. I think they were stressed over the ferts and excel if anything. Actually I am sure that must be the cause.

But what should I do now?

Just to add. The ferts were dry dosed by the teaspoon. I think that was inaccurate because it should go by weight. I use a scale now in my other tank and it is dosed completely accurately :(
COuld this just be bacterial because of the few white spots? SHould I clear the ick meds with carbon and do something else? Thanks.

:( I am beyond upset, embarrassed, and horrified even that I had to post this thread. Especially on the day I got to stock my 75g. :-(

Aww that's terrible. It just seems that sometimes the beginners start out rough like you and I but sometimes they get lucky. We just haven't.

Thanks for that response. I feel a little better knowing that it can happen to anyone. I am so upset. I feel like it's my fault. I have brought in new fish/ plants/ water/ fertilizer. Who knows what caused it. I just need to know if I am treating the right problem.

It is Ich for sure. I'm treating but it's super persistent. I couldn't go above 82 degrees, the cories had stopped moving and eating at 84 degrees. I can't use salt. And I'm only able to half-dose meds. SO....it's a waiting game. Zero deaths so far, and taking care not to cross contaminate to my other tanks.

How are you fish doing?
The corydoras don't get ick from what I know so it's pointless treating them with medications for ick. I don't know if they can be cariers though. Someone else can answer that.
I wouldn't use meds that can affect corys considering there is so many other options. You can use seachem paraguard to treat ick in a tank with corys.
You need very good aeration if you use medication and increased temperature.
And my personal opinion is not to use excel in a tank with corys.

Thanks for asking. I'm so worried and upset. Just sold my extra bottles of excel on ebay today. I won't use excel anymore period. I put a small dose in my 75g and today I found an Apisto dead and my bristlenose is whiter then a sheet. I guess I could have gotten a bad bottle. {There may have been a lack of oxygen} But my drop checker didn't show an over abundance of co2 so....I'm inclined to blame the excel.

My cories weren't stressed until after I used it. I had to do quite a few water changes after dosing it. Then I missed the warning signs and BAM! tertras had white spots. I am not noticing spots on the cories so you may be right, but I still have to treat the tank. The tetras are very new within a few days of seeing the white spots, I want to think that one of them already had it. Otherwise, I feel pretty hopeless on my ability to keep fish. My water was clean. Tank cycled. I thought I had an issue with the filter but I removed a dying plant and my numbers were right on, since.

I lowered the water level as far as my filter intake allows, so there is a really good splash, and the temp right now is at 82 degrees. The cories are moving and eating, thought I don't like the way 2 of their fins look. The tetras are still covered in spots.

Sorry for the novel. I'm pretty upset. Problems in both tanks. :-(

Don't worry. It will eventually pass.
Are the tetras getting more spots or do you think the treatment is working? How many days have you gone so far treating?

Don't feel hopeless on your ability to keep fish. I'm fighting Ich in my tank too. I thought I had perfect water. We can only do our best for our fish. We're trying to create and maintain a livable environment in a 50 gallon glass container that GOD / Nature uses Millions of gallons of water and a Million variables and processes that we don't even know about. I have spent thousands of dollars and hours on my tank and the only thing guaranteed is that not all fish will live as long as I'd like or expect. We can only do our best. Hang in there. :good:

:rolleyes: Thanks!

I have been half dosing for 8 days. I'm doing a water change today and need to redose... If I don't get good results with this in another week, I'll get the Paraguard. I just didn't want to switch medications again. The tetras do not look better. Still covered in spots. I'm at a loss. I don't think the temp is high enough, and the med strong enough. But what can I do?
