Hey all , i have had my fish tank setup for months now and had and it was all set up real nice the fish were happy and the water was tested and it was perfect then recently i went out and bought a new filter/pump with a uv light inside it  as i had a small growth of algae and was making the white rocks look horrid , the same shop where i got my pump from i also bought a bottom feeder / algae eater which after a few days of having him i noticed white spots on him so i went back to my local fish shop and got treatment then began the process took the carbon out the filter as i still had my previous one in the tank i then also gave it a 20% water change cleared all the stones and wash of all the decor,
i repeated the water change again about 4 days later as by them 2 fish had died, so i went back to the fish shop and got my water tested again but it was all fine my ph lvls were all good and everything else which they tested .. and a week and 2 days of trying to treat this white spot they are now dead 5 gold fish , 6 neon's , 2 bottom feeders they all gone to fishy heaven :( i don't understand what i done wrong i followed there instruction which they had written down for me but i do believe the last fish i bought diseased all my other fish . so now all my fish have gone i will need to start all over again and i'm now seeking professional help to get stages of clean out my tank and starting all over again !

How (if at all) did you cycle your filter prior to the fish going in? When the fish stores test your water, it's pretty pointless in them telling you that the results "are fine"...you need to the EXACT readings of Ammonia AND NitrItes...even the smallest readings of either leave your fish open to disease.
Did you simply start this new filter with new media inside? If so, this could open you up to all sorts of issues.
How big is your tank? I can only presume, as you mention you had 5 Goldfish, that it is pretty big.
Invest in your own liquid based test kit (£20-25 on eBay), read the beginners link in my signature below and start again.
Good luck.

Terry.

Sorry to hear that you lost all of your fish.

First of all we will need to know your tank size, as that will help determine how many fish or what types you can easily house in the tank. Secondly we need to know actual water stats, not just the "LFS said all good". There would be literally hundreds of threads on this site alone where LFS has said the water is fine and its far from fine.
When you say the tank was set up for months was that with the filter cycled? In other words had the necessary bacteria needed in the filter to convert ammonia been allowed to grow and develop or where all the fish put in the brand new tank from the first couple of days of having the tank?

As for goldfish with neon tetras that would never have worked long term, goldfish are a cold or cool water fish while neon tetras are tropical. Also goldfish need BIG tanks in order for them to grow to their full potential.

The medication that you got from the shop should have had directions on the packet/ bottle. Usually most white spot medications require you do add the prescribed amount while removing activated carbon from the filter. You can  also raise the water temp to seed up the life cycle of the whitespot since the medication only kills it in its free swimming stage. The medication I usually use is a once every 7 days deal until the white spot is gone, saves doing partial water changes part way through and then recalculating the new dose of medication.

Thanks for the reply .

I have an 80 gallon tank the reason i had a few gold fish in there was because i got them out of my sons fish tank after his pump broke and required abit of attention i did find them a new home until the white spot broke out i added those 4 gold fish about 3 weeks before my fish got sick when i got my new filters i gave it a rinse though when i done my 20 % water change i rinsed it though with the tank water not tap water, i had the original pump set up in there and then left it in there also when i put my new filter in,
all the fish i had  were put into the tank throughout the space of 2 months ish, I started off with 2 gold fish then added a small bottom feeder about a week after then week after that i put in 6 neon's (rough guess ) then about a month  then i added the new bottom feeder which i believe had white spot, the original temp was on 72 F and raised it up to 80 F which was recommended by the fish shop and i put in the heater because of my algae problem from first starting which the fish shop recommended which worked well so then as i had the heater i decided then to get the neon's then so on .. the medication i done correctly i even asked at the shop to double check i was doing it correct then even wrote me down instruction when adding the the treatment and about the water changes and also removed the carbon filter and turned the uv light off on the new filter and also stopped feeding them 2 , but i will take the advice and buy a kit on ebay now to start fresh hope this makes sense guys i'm not the smartest person in the world as u can probably tell :)
