Hi all!

Ive got a noob question.

Well is it possabile to cure whitespots with darkness, covering the tank for a few days with a blanket?

A friend of mine have been doing this for years with succes according to him but I dont know?
Basically the darkness stops the Parasite in swimming stage to see Fish, Parasite is 1 celled ( Amoeba ) so I find it very hard to believe that it will have eyes.

Anybody have experience with this?

I gonna test next time i have them.

Thx

Well I havent had an aquarium long but I have not heard of that before, Covering a tank can help remove some algaes, but not heard of it removing an ailment. Be interesting to see if ayone knows if this works.

best thing for treating whitespot is copper, but if you have shrimps and snails in there steer clear of it lol. not heard of the blackout methd b4 either, only way i can see it working is reducing the fish stress levels thus making them produce mucas again, thus making them more resiliant to the desiese. tho i cant say it would be too good for the plants tho :p
if you try it i can tell you this tho... you will have no algae after it ;)

hope it helps

I've heard of using darkness to enhance chemical treatment. One of the main chemicals used to treat whitespot - Malachite green - is light sensitive - so might be more stable and thus more effective in the dark.

Not sure about darkness on its' own tho

Darkness on its own wont do anything, the parasite doesn’t need light to complete its life cycle. What Majjie says is right, some people turn off the aquarium light or avoid sunlight as it can oxidize some medications and make them less effective.
