Thats a high nitrite reading, need to know how long the tank has been set up, how many gallons is the tank, and full stock list of fish of how many and which type.
Whitespot looks like they have been sprinkled in salt, any flicking and rubbing against objects or laboured breathing, columnaris looks fluffy in appearance.

hi,

tank setup nearly 2 weeks. it's 33 gals. 6 danios total (2 zebra, 2 leopard and 2 golden).

since day 1 i have had established gravel in the tank (from another tank), fish went in on Friday.

thanks

Dave

Explain the high nitrite reading, it goes off the chart then the reading will come down, not long to go, now need to know if y0u think it is whitepot.

should i do a partial change? of will it come down as tank cycles? my ammonia reads 0.5 by the way. pH is 7.4 and Nitrate is 10.

i am not sure, i noticed it today only, he's quite active and feeding very well, behaviour is same, but i didn't notice the mark until today! i'll keep an eye on it, if it worstens, i'll treat the tank.

I would recommend a water change, if only danio in there add some salt to the tank, add it gradually one tablespoon to 5 gal, and increase aeration.
It look fluffy to me it looks like columnaris as that goes along the back, you will need meds, myxazin and pimafix.

hi,

how gradual? days, hours? i'm confused about adding salt to freshwater? i am a newbie though!

i have air flow in tank already.

sorry, what looks fluffy?

if I treat with salt and meds, will it matter if fish are healthy! do I need both myxazin and pimafix?

thanks very much

Dave

Well i would get both meds, the salt will help with the gills with the high nitrites, the patch looks fluffy in the picture, or is it me.

Hi,

I could not get the meds you mentioned from my local "pets at home", too late to go to my lfs, closed, and I thought best to do something tonight and not wait, the spot has got worst in the last few hours!!!

I am just finishing a partial water change (waiting for water to cool another 4 degrees, taking ages) and then I will add salt (doc wellfish's aquarium salt), and I got some Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Melafix antibacterial fish remedy!!

I hope this is correct,

thanks for all your assistance, i'll keep you updated.

Dave

update

well, i have semi good new, and really bad news

the white mark on the zebra has got smaller, definately, BUT, the other zebra, unexpectidly has died

come to think of it, he was quite a bit smaller than the rest, i returned him tonight and the guy said it's possible he "got through quarantine" and was maybe too young? or already sick? does this sound right?

I treated the tank again (as it's a 7 day treatment) and have a new Zebra (a bigger one), i kept rejecting them until he netted a large healthy looking specimen. he is happily swimming with his tank buddies already.

i would hate to think i have done something wrong? but i have kept on top of my tests and did a 20% change last night, maybe too late?

i'm gonna go and beat myself up a bit.

Dave

To be honest i wouldn't off added a new fish to the tank while the nitrites are high and there is desease in the tank, good luck anyway.

OH, i followed shops advice, I told them what the prob was!!!

cr4p, should i do daily change until nitrite is very low or 0 again?

Small water changes are best, as if you do large ones the tank will take for ever to cycle.

Hi,

I just did a water test: -

ammonia 0.5
Nitrate 20
Nitrite - a similar reading to the one I posted a pic of, does not "quite" match anything on the card, could be 0.5, could be higher?

So, what I did was take 50% tank water and 50% tap (which has 0 nitrite, as tested) and tested that, this gave a definate 0.25 reading!! can I assume my nitrite is 0.5 then? and that maybe my colour card, or solution, or eye, is a bit off?

thanks for all your help Wilder, i'll change less water % next time.

thanks

Dave

Possibly because it's off the chart! Just an educated guess but I'd say your filter is not nearly mature enough to handle six fish and adding more or larger fish will only make things worse. If you want any chance of keeping all six then I would of thought daily small (10%) water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite at a level the fish can survive. Also go to your lfs and beg for some mature filter media!
