If it is active carbon it can remove meds, but it depends how fresh it is. If the carbon is more than about 4 weeks old it will already be saturated and won't absorb anything anymore, so you can leave it alone.

Oh I see. Not sure if it's active carbon but it's more than a month old. Phew.

@CrazyAirborne: My med has no instructions :X In another thread when I mentioned the stuff in it, someone told me it's a "potent mix" and I should do WCs in between so I won't overdose or kill off too much bacteria in the filter. I'll most likely just do a WC before dosing the meds.

Oh gosh. I just went to add the meds for today and saw all my barbs with white spot! More tiny spots on their tail fins and body. Yesterday there were no white spots and I didn't do anything. No new additions whatsoever but I did take out the baby amazon sword that I'm suspicious of.

I'm so freaked out :( does this mean I should dose the meds daily instead of every other day?

This parasite lives in the fishes skin for a few days and then when it reproduces it release thousands of spores which then drift around the tank looking to latch on to a new victim. It is these drifting spores that are killed by the meds. So you must treat everyday so that they are killed. Do you know the name of the meds you are using?

I didn't want to overdose by dosing everyday that's why :(

Its a local brand Ocean Free.

I was told to add meds and 1 teaspoon of salt today and wait 3 days though.

You need Malachite green...... salt ain't going to do it

I forgot to add, I removed the filter insert because I think those black pellets were neutralising the meds or something. I dosed yesterday and my fish looked worse today. :(

I'm thinking if my fish don't look better tomorrow, I'll do a WC (to remove any parasite on the bottom of tank or free floating ones), dose again, and repeat that daily.

@DevotedToDiscus: Isn't the methylene blue sufficient?

Oh man. I'm so worried cause I'm going on a holiday next Thursday! *faint*

Is there some sort of contact details on the bottle of the medication - without manufacturer's instructions, you're just guessing - you need to find out what the instructions are.

I just sent them an email. Hope they'll reply soon..

I just checked on them and tested the water.

Ammonia: <0.25ppm (nearly 0)
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: <10ppm

The barbs are less active now. White spots seem to be lesser than this morning however they're constantly flecking and tail fins look a bit ragged. I'm guessing the fins are due to stress?

I'll do a WC tomorrow morning before I dose so I don't dilute the meds that's in the water now.

If it is improving then stick with it

I didn't know if they were cause they were still flecking and tails looked messed up argh! I'm always so clueless when it comes to whitespot :S Any ideas if continuing with the salt will be of any good?

Salt and a temperature raise to 30C is all I ever do for white spot. Salt does work, but you have to be careful. Some fish won't tolerate salt and it is bad for your inverts (shrimp and snails) and plants. I'd never use a med if I didn't have instructions for it's use.

I see. I took out my snails cause I know the meds would kill them too. I always used this med for whitespot and it worked. Not sure why it's taking longer to have an effect. I'm really hoping they'll be better tomorrow morning..

Would like to know how often should WCs be done when treating white spot?
