Not quite an emergency *yet* but I'd like to figure it out/stop it before it becomes one.

My betta was recently moved back into my planted community tank, so that his tank could be used as a QT for the moment for some fish I recently bought. He seemed healthy at the time but had had a couple bouts of severe constipation over the past 2-3 weeks, if that has anything to do with it.

Today I noticed a huge glob (think a booger or something. Excuse me for the comparison, but it looks just like a booger actually) coming out of one side of his gills. I guess you could say it is "fuzzy", but it is a lot more gelatinous or cloudlike than fuzzy. It jiggles in the current as he swims. Its long and has a sort of pointed, amorphous shape to it.

His behavior appears to be normal. Water stats are all OK (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, >20 nitrate. Tankmates are green neon tetras and corydoras.

Picture of the blob:
Click Its kinda big so I put a link. If you need some better pictures I can try to get some.

What could it be?

Can't make much out in the pic i'm afraid.

Does it look like a parasite.
Any the gills raggy on the ends.
Do the gills look swollen or inflamed.
Any excess mucas on the gills.
And lumps or sores on the gills, or behind the gill plate.
Does the blob resemble rotting food that got trapped in the gill.

I came home today and the glob is nowhere to be seen. His gills on that side look normal except the gill plate is a little pink perhaps? But I can't tell if I'm seeing what isn't there with the pinkness. It didn't quite look like a parasite, and food would be possible since I switched him from pellets to flakes and he is still figuring out how to eat them properly, but the blob didn't really look like it had anything in the center other than thicker goo.

Ok.

I think I would half dose some melafix just to be on the safe side.
Can you isolate the fish.

I can't really isolate him at the moment, all of my tanks are tied up. I can go down and get some melafix today if you think that could help.

If you have some myxazin by waterlife that just as good.
Jusr thinking of infection that's all.
