Hi,

I bought a 3 gallon kit from walmart and cycled my tank for a week intended to keep some small fish and some RCS. I have some plants (micro sword, hair grass, and some others. It is a small tank, and I got a heater from tetra that is submersible but no temp adjusment, it kept the water at 78 degree all the time which is pretty good temp for most tropical fish (I think). I bought 3 white cloud mountain from the discount pet store, and they were fine for a week and actively swimming and I thought all is good, my RCS are doing fine too. I turned my light on and look briefly before I head to work and they were not dead. My wife called a few hrs later and told me 2 of the fishes were dead and I was puzzled. I googled the fish and found out the temp best for them is btw 64-72. I believe my water is good as my RCS are doing ok (they are more sensitive to water, right?). One fish is still alive, could the water temp killed them or maybe something else?

Thanks,
Alan

i'm thinking by letting it 'cycle' for a week it is not cycled properly and too many inhabitants have been added and the good bacteria can't process the ammonia quick enough.

Since you already have fish you will need to read FISH-IN CYCLE

Alternativley you could return the fish and go FISHLESS CYCLE route.

Yes the minnows do prefer cooler temps but that will probably not be why there dead, they are also too active for your tank and need groups of at least 6

The fish are just not suitable for an aquarium that size.. do read about cycling and you may want to stick to shrimp.
