:/ This has really made me feel i should quit!, My tank is currently cycling, Yet, Been about a week now, But White aglae it looks like. Its large and grows, It looks like mold, but not the green colour, All white. It also Spread all around my tank, I have just took everything out, washed it, Including my filter, which was not plesant to look at what so ever! It kind of looks like spider web, but perhaps more wrapped up to the item. All i have added to my tank is "ammo lock" and some Plant fert for the plants, But i added some plant fert to the other tank, and nothing has happened!
Guys/ladies, im clueless, and this really is making me upset :(
Also, I think as a result, Small white dots (off algae are growing on the tank, Well was growing anyway intil i got rid)
Any help?

thanks all

are you cycling with fish or fishlessly?

algae feeds off ammonia, when you have a lot of ammonia in your tank during cycling you can often get an algae bloom so it could be this is the cause of it. It could also not be algae but a bacteria bloom, I appreciate stuff like this is fairly hard to describe, could you get a picture of it which may help us identify what it is and what you need to do to get rid of it.

Either way, dont resort to cleaning your filter! Just be pacient, algae wont do any harm certainly while cycling :)

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have no fish in the tank! Only some bogwood and a few plants. Yes i have some pictures, but not sure how to upload them up here!

upload the pics onto somewhere like photobucket or flickr and then post the links.

are you cycling fishlessly by adding ammonia then?

Yes i cycling with no fish, but adding ammonia. Here are the pics (hope they work)

In fact, thats not going to work, Sorry, i really have little IT skills :( Perhaps if these pictures dont work, i could send them too you email?

go to the site www.photobucket.com

you'll need to register for an account but it's free and just takes a couple of minutes. there's then on screen instructions for how to upload documents onto the site. when you've uploaded them it'll give you a link for the pictures, you just copy and paste the link here and then we'll be able to see them.

middle pic doesn't work.... but that at least gives us a good idea.

have you tried boiling the bogwood... i've had bogwood before than gives off some white fluff stuff when first put in the tank, boiling it should kill whatever it is.

yes, but the bacteria you're trying to grow live on in the filter, not on the bogwood. :good:

minute amounts may be growing on the bogwood, but not enough to have any tangible affect.

Looks like mopani to me :) in which case it is well known for it to mould a little when first put into the aquarium, this is fine as once its established that will clear :)

Thanks for all you help, But i have got some terrible news. When i cleaned my tank, I did about 20% water chance in the process, And thereby put it down the loo. I didt think much off it intil and went into the loo an hour later, too find the colour of the water was black/brown almost like the colour of coke. I thought ####. So i went to my tank, did a test, to see my stats and realise that in 20min (the time it says you must wait) the colour is very dark blue and not very light green which its meant to be! therefore my stats must be higher than 5.0mg/l.

HELP! i think this ammo lock im using is buggering my tank up

im sooooooooooooooo mad! i want to cry!

if you are fishless cycling you shouldn't be using ammo-lock.......

ammo-lock converts ammonia to ammonium, it's less toxic but can still be used by the filter bacteria, it's handy if you are cycling with fish in. But if you've no fish in then there's no need to make the ammonia less toxic, cos there's nothing suffering because of the toxicity...... :/

most test kits test for total ammonia and ammonium but it may be that your test kit is getting funny readings cos of it.

do a 90% water change to get rid of the ammo-lock, then dose the tank back up to 5ppm of ammonia and carry on from there with the fishless cycle.
