hi, we have decided to get a dog and now narrowed it down to a whippet or an otterhound. we have done lots of research on both breed and still cant decide! any one with experience with either or both breed?

thankc

I know neither breed  but never been a fan of skinny type dogs- just been an googled the Otterhound and they are gorgeous, assume from their names they are a working dog?

yes they use to hunt otters until the ban of hunting otters then they got made redundant and now the breed is now on decline. we were going to get a whippet as we think they will suit our household better until, then i remembered the otterhound i met and felt in love with it, so i started researching the breed and we think they will fit in too. the boyfriend is keener at the otterhound than the whippet as he once got so drunk and slept on the floor of friends house and woke up with their dog sitting on his face ( a 18 year old whippet who was never got neutered)!lol

Growing up with whippets I would say get one, but then I am biased. They have a lovely temperament and exercising them is very easy too, they like to run and only need to for a little while (15 minutes) and then they've had the exercise they need. Obviously more is better :)

Those Ottohounds look like they'll be a nightmare to keep clean, and you'll have dog hair everywhere too I think...but they do look the business!

you will probably find it a lot easier to get a whippet than an otterhound. the otterhound is a very, very vunerable breed and not many litters are bred. infact if im right i think they are top of the list for lowest litters born each year. so you may find you could be on a waiting list for a long time, and most good breeders will prefer there pups to go to people with experience of such breeds, and as so few are bred and they have a huge waiting list they can be very picky. do be careful which ever you buy where you get your pup from. try the breed clubs. visit a few breed shows talk to breeders there, good ones will interogate you more than you them. research what health problems are in what ever breed you go for. if the breeder doesnt health test there breeding dogs and provide you with the health certs, walk away. if they are raised in a dingy shed withough proper socialisation, walk away. if you can ring them up and they have a pup waiting for you, be suspicous. and most definatly insist on seeing the mum with the pups, and if possible any other relatives espcially dad. whippets and definatly otterhounds are not breeds you would generally find bred by your average puppy farmer or back yard breeder but still if you are going to but a pup choose your breeder carefully. you might pay a cheap price to buy your pup and feel you have got a bargin but you wont have when you are at the vets all the time.
regarding the choice between the two breeds, if you have not had much dog experience i would go for a whippet. neither would be my choice of first time dogs but out of the 2 the whippet would be better. otterhounds are huge dogs and are basically a nose on legs. you will find them hard to train and walk. if you are into slogging about the countryside for hours on end following your huge nose on legs fine, if you dont mind a filthy house with hair everywhere fine. im not saying they arent lovely dogs, but you really need to speak to people who have the breed. try going on dog forums, one i go one is called dogpages and i know there are people on there who are owned by otterhounds and whippets. a whippet would make more of a pet and be happy with the gentle walks as long as theycan run and your house wont be taken over by a whippet like it will an otterhound. an otterhound well they are just something else, scent hounds are not the easiest breeds and as lovely as they are otters are very houndy.sorry to burst your bubble but i would definatly say out of the two go for the whippet. you probably wouldnt get an otterhound anyway and im pretty sure they go for a lot of money, well they would wouldnt they. hope that helps.

i would defo go for the whippet, they are a really cute dog, and really dainty.

cheers :good:

peggysmum - thank you for the info. i've had dogs before ( shar pei and other mix breed) and my partner have had dogs almost all his lives ( his parents always have atleast a lab and a boarder collie) and his best friend always have at least 1 newfoundland in the house. the last few years we rented a small house with a small garden so we didn't want to keep dogs and now we have our own house and a decent size garden as well as a river and good parks near by we feel we are ready for one again. i'm not house proud and my cats have already taken over the house anyhow. lol

I have had a whippet and she was brilliant lol soo gentle and caring but surprisingly robust lol id say whippet all the way. Plus they dont need anywhere as much exercise as an otterhound will need, two 20min walks will do them and a comfy bed, gotta be soft and squidgy otherwise they will most probably get sores, i use a folded up duvet for my greyhound and we did the same for our whippet.
Both are hard to find but if you definately want a whippet then get in touch with the whippet rescue/breeders society and they will put you in touch with people/rescues with them for sale/adoption.

Gotta agree but you MUST keep in mind that whippets are sight hounds which means that they can see alot further than we can BUT it is 50/50 as to wether you get one that wants to chase small and furries i mean ours never did whereas my greyhound is a little bug*er for chasing lol but they make brilliant family dogs as they dont tend to be bouncy and will do anything for food lol
