I think it all depends on what look you are trying to achieve. For me, having been a scuba diver for many years, I just wanted mine to look like what the bottom looked like thru my mask.

I think if you stay with aragonite and not sugarfine, you'll be in good shape. Some have posted negatives with regards to black sand with regards to keeping it clean. SH

IYO Which of those most closely resembles the bottom ?

2MM is the optimal size? Nature's Ocean Bio-Activ Live Aragonite Reef Substrate looks to fit the bill.

1.0-2.5MM grain size

You probably wont' go wrong with any aragonite sand if it is not superfine....I think you'll be fine with that one (JW Dundees Honey Brown for me). SH

Follow that with a Sierra Nevada for me :)

On a side note, at least a clear winner is emerging :drool:
