Hey guys, what would you choose out of the above two methods for a future 450 gallon tank ? (8ft X 3ft X 2.5ft)

Eheim 2080 - 1700l/h X 3
Eheim 2078 - 1850l/h X 2

TOTAL TURNOVER FROM CANISTERS - 8800l/h

Sumps - Either a 10000l/h pump, 12000l/h pump or 15000l/h pump?

Just trying to work out what will be best.

Thanks in advance, Adam

The sump will be considerably cheaper to run than 5 canister filters and will have less visable furniture in the tank.

Ok, the canisters will use 195W of power, and yes, i imagine the sump pump would be cheaper and provides more flow. Does anyone have any ideas for pumps for the sump? Thanks, Adam

You might want to take a look at pond pumps. They tend to have much higher capacities than the pumps we usually have in our tanks. The one that runs the fountain in my summer tub pond is rated at only about 600 gph but that is with a 2 foot lift. It moves a lot more water than you might think. The flow is strong enough that the 150 gallon tub spins like a whirlpool unless I carefully aim the outlet so that it hits the side of the tank and splits fairly evenly in both directions. Then it just swirls around a little.

sump without a doubt

my 8'x30x28 runs of a 30x30x24 sump & an eheim hobby 5000l/h & total cost including media & pump was about £180-200

Consider a sump but using a turf scrubber rather than a wet/dry (or even in addition to). There is a great thread on turf scrubbers in the marine section at the moment.
