I am having trouble finding Mbuna stock locally - I tried another lfs today - the only Malawi they had in had arrived by mistake and the chap in the shop didn't know what they were ! - but they did take my eye - he thinks they are Labeotropheus - they were about inch and a half and a uniform pale blue colour and I could see no other distiguishing marks, egg spots etc. Does anyone know what they might be? - don't want to just take a chance on them !

Thanks

R

I noticed you live in Cheshire, if you get chance to come into Manchester, I can highly reccommend Oasis aquarium:

http://www.oasisaquarium.co.uk/

The website's not great but the store is well worth a visit, at least 20 tanks just for Malawi's, lots of rare fish aswell as the usual zebra's etc. Loads of tropical and marine tanks also.

Also High Leigh Garden Centre Near Warrington/Knutsford is OK, not too many Malawi's usually though.

Not too sure on your fish though, there are a few Labeotropheus species, google it and you should find pics to help identify.

Good point TBR and apologies, didn't spot your location, oops. :p Seriously, Oasis is a great place and well worth the trip down the M56 from Chester, you won't regret it, directions on the Website.

Cheers Ferris.

gixer....whereabouts in Wrexham is Waterways?

I have heard it is decent but don't know how to get to it.

Am moving over to our Wrexham office in about 6 weeks and it would be a handy LFS to go to.

(i know how i'll be spending my lunch breaks then!!)

cheers in advance

EDIT: Limestar is good. Was there two weeks ago, the guy had just taken in a tank full of mixed Mbuna (about 18 of them) all about 3 - 4 inches long and looking good. He said he would do me the lot for £50.00 but i didn't have my tank set up!!!!

gutted! :/

waterways is down by wrexham industrial estate.

if you come of the A483 (from chester) and take the exit for acton, gresford and wrexham iddustrial estate. take a left and head for holt (still sign posted industrial estate) you will see waterways on the left. its a garden centre type place.. has a lovely stock of fish though.. speak to rich if you can.

Hi guys. Just to add another shop to the list, there's a good one just outside Wrexham at the Spectrum Garden Centre. I think its called JP Aquatics or something like that.

Limestar is a good place but the guy in there tends to be a bit pushy and he scares me a bit! He does know what he is talking about though (Don't mention Ps. Auratus to him or you'll never get out of there!).

Most of my Malawis were bought from Waterways, which is a brilliant shop I don't think I've ever met a bloke who knows more about fish than him!

I've heard there's a good place in the back of some blokes house in Crewe I'll ask my husband about that when he wakes up!

Now I'm awake CK Aquatics in Crewe is a fantastic shop, around 30 tanks full of Malawis and a few trops and reptiles, Found the address on google, pasted it below

If you head from chester towards Nantwich, Go past Barbridge Marina, turn left at the cross roads towards Crewe (there's always roadworks there), you'll come to two roundabouts, follow Crewe for each, then keep going, this will take you on to West Street, When you see Swinton Insurance on your left, turn left there, (If you see asda on your right you have gone too far) then take your second right, Keep your eye out on the left for Chetwode Street, I think it is the second or third left.

They stock the usual zebras, labs, peacocks, synos and rare species too

lmao @ saying the guy in limestar is chatty.

i have spent many an afternoon chatting to him, he used to right into his malawis once, nice fella once you realise he's not a complete nutter. he has lost the plot a bit though these days.

spectrum garden centre occasionally have a few nice fish (by accident) they only have 'mixed malawis' that have been so interbred they are not recognisable imo.
think they stock a few nice esterae though.

have any of you local guys checked out the place in colwyn bay? supposed to be good for africans but i'm yet to make it there when its actually open :S

rich in waterways is a good fella though, and if he doesnt have what you want, he will do his best to get it for you. great shop.

btw..its me who lives in shotton ;)

I can't believe this - I live 5 minutes from Crewe and never heard of CK Aquatics - went to Manchester to stock the tank - wow 30 tanks right on my doorstep - but I'm working all week now...ah

PS - really interesting to read the comments on Limestar - i went the other day, they have some REALLY BIG lizards and snakes in there - the couple were having a really strange row - I was the only one in the shop and it felt like a scene out of League of Gentlemen !!!!!
