Hi All,

I'm thinking of adding some more fishies to my tank this weekend

. There are 3 breeds that I would like to eventually stock which are, 6 corydoras, german/bolivian/golden rams (1 type only) and some Dwarf Gouramsi. I'm thinking that the Rams should be added when the tank is more mature (around 6 months?) so was thinking maybe some DG's next before the Cory's? Also what would be the best number of each breed e.g 2 female DG's or 1 male and 2 females etc and the same for the rams? Any info greatly appreciated as always

A gravel substrate isn't ideal for Cories but it looks pea-sized and fairly well rounded off in the photo so it shouldn't be too problematic. If you get which ever cories you want, you won't regret it! They're incredible little fish :) Personally, peppered cories are my favorite although sterbai cories are pretty popular, too. Do you know which breed you want?

Alongside your catfish, you could probably fit a bristlenose pleco in there, too. Otherwise, you'll have room for about 2 or 3 more catfish.

I did a bit of research and also a member on here who lives locally and has cory's thinks my gravel is ok. I like the Sterbai and peppered Cory's as you've mentioned but it all depends what stock is at my LFS I'm just not fussy on the look of the albino cory's.

Neither am I, I like striking patterns and colours whereas albinos give a more matte appearance. Keep us posted on whatever you decide to go with. Many Corydoras catfish will school and get along with other breeds of the same species. :)

Be wary of the DG's. Lovely looking fish BUT some do carry the dreaded iridovirus which is an absolute killer.
We had two DG's (males), one bullied the other so much that it went back to the LFS and I couldn't save the other one - I had to euthanase it.
They also require pristine water conditions, apparently anything out of the norm will result in a sick fish.
So if you are thinking if getting these please be aware.
The iridovirus by the way apparently also affects Honey Gouramis.

Looking at Rams, Bolivian are far harder than German Blue (we have two of these) and the life expectancy of a GBR is not more than two months!!!
Ours have been with us five weeks so far - fingers crossed. So hopefully your attitude to adding these in six months time will pay off big time and you will have very healthy fish!!!

Again from my own research, your tank should be at least 6 months mature before adding the cory's - particularly the pygmy variety and also Oto's if you were to consider them - otherwise there is a good chance that they will just die off. Nobody knows why this happens to the Oto's - it just does.

Hope that helps as regards your decision and I hope that you have a very healthy tank in which your fish love living in.

Regards

David

Thanks DJH,

Another member warned me about the iridovirus, anyone have any other suggestions instead of 2/3 DG's that will be ok with my current/future stock?

I can understand the reasoning behind not putting Otto's in until the tank reaches 6 months (the invisible, micro layers of algae that they eat take time to appear)..but i've never understood why the same goes for Corys...
Could anyone expand on this, please?

Terry.

I'm not sure, But I know otto's are very sensitive to water quality's, maybe it's the same reason?

Whatever you go for, they're all great fish :good:

Personally, I'd go for the cories first seeing as I want some again myself!

Two months? Try at least two years :good:

Terry.
