Hi,

I would like ideas for small tropical fish; I like the ideas of guppies; I'm just a bit worried if they keep breeding I will have too many (I really like guppies) and I also like betta fish (but I've been told on here that I can't have them together). I'm just wondering are there any other fish similar to the guppy or betta fish? Ideally I'd like something small and really colourful.

Thanks

P.S. I know it's vague but I'm just looking into fish at the moment.

If you have a roomy tank, many bettas will do fine with guppies. I have seen the same warnings but my own experiences of keeping them together just don't match up well with the advice. There seems to be a thought by some people that bettas are inherently aggressive. I find that they will sometimes swim at a nearby fish just to drive it away but they don't chase and attack other fish except other bettas. My endlers even live with a betta and he helps me control their usual population explosion by slowing it a bit.

Dwarf gourami males are VERY colourful.
Paradise fish (similar to betta)

....are two that you could research.

Small tetras are peaceful and also community fish. They are not livebearers either so no worry of growing stock. But I say start with guppies, they will give you a good insight into tropical fish including dealing with fry.

As for keeping them with Bettas, do research! Lots on this forum which will provide direction. ( from what I heard, you may have problems as some males will see male guppies as threats due to finage)

I hear that all the time Fearce. See my picture above, I am not speculating. This guy has been living with endlers for well over a year and I recently moved him to this tank to help me control run away population growth.

Fearce; I definately do fancy guppies.

My only real specification for tropical fish is something colourful (preferably not orange) and something small.

I've had goldfish for years and still have many; I'd just rather something that is totally different from a goldfish.

at the moment ive got a passive beta the only thing he didnt like was one orange platty but at the moment he is in a tank with mollies neons and a few plattys and both have had fry and he didnt touch them the only thing he attackes is the bubbles.

but on the other hand my sister has a betta and he was agressive to plattys and coloured mollies but was fine with her white mollies and bumlbee gobys

but i also have an option if there was to ever be a complication i can have him in another tank that i use

Thanks reaper; it's just I saw one in a tank with a load of other fish at the weekend and I was wondering. As normally they are separate.

One of the men I work with said he has over 15 different types of fish in his tank and his betta doesn't bother any of them; he said it would sometimes go for it's own reflection otherwise it was fine.

The only problem that I have had keeping bettas with other fish was when the other fish were not very nice to my betta. The betta is almost always a peaceful community tank fish but there are fish that will tear his fins and make him just feel miserable.
