I have a budget of £80 (shop price, not internet)

which eheim filter should I buy? Im looking for flow and a good filter that will last long as ive had a bad experience with a tetra ex 700 which had just the right amount of flow.
So of you could reccommend an eheim filter I would be most grateful and i can see if my lfs has it in stock.

cheers

Will

You are a bit limited with a budget of £80 as the eheim's are quite expensive.

Personally with that budget I'd go for the eheim classic 2217+ which is £90 on charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk not sure if you would get it that cheap at a store.

we, really, need to know the capacity of your tank, before a recommendation can be given. filter flow and size have a direct effect on the size of tank they can support. if its, around 20-30 gallons, a 2224, £50-90 if you look, is "almost up to it. lol if its bigger than that? you are in trouble for £80 with any make.

As above, don't know what size tank you have, but I have an Eheim 2215 that's been successfully running my 30 gal with no problems at all for the last 5 years. Mine came free with the tank ( second hand ) but I've read they're about £70-80 ?

the tank is 125l in size and currently has the 00lph juwel internal. As the tank is planted, I jsut feel I need more flow so I need a high flow filter for the money I have. As Eheim is a good reliable make and has 10 year guarantee on all its parts then I felt this was th best make to go with after my tetra ex700 leaked constantly.

i think your budget is highly optimistic, lfs prices are more expensive than online, and for online you would struggle to get a good sized eheim for that money..... not thinking aboout price i have seen this:

although have never used it, i am planning on getting the tetratec1200 for my 125litre, mostly because of cost, plus i have heard mostly good things about the tetratec1200

Why not just get a couple of Hydor Koralia 1's at each end of the tank. That would give you a much better turnover rate and a much better spread, you would have maybe about £20 to spend on other things too, like decent plant fertilisers (many years supply of dry ferts) or light reflectors to give the plants more light.

If you wanted to go really classy, get a big Tunze Nanostream powerhead for £80- they are more expensive, but excellent quality and use less electricity. Much better option that adding a second filter :good:.

surely if your tank is planted you don't want too much flow?

Nope, it's the other way around, plants do much better with high turnovers, the trick is making sure it's even all the way around the tank and not concentrated in one place enough to break plants.

hat's why the Hydors are so good, and same with spraybars.

right so its high turnover rather than flow then?
in my mind there is a difference. but maybe thats just me
on my 5ft planted tank i had a large eheim and an fx5 but the outputs from the filters were kept behind a section of drain pipe in the corner to limit flow.

You are not likely to get an up-to-scratch Eheim on that budget, unless you go with a Classic which are a major shock if you are used to easier to prime filters  If you buy second hand, you run the same risk of leaks with the Eheim also. I'd may be look at fixing the EX700 (see your other thread on the EX700 problems) as neglect is the likely cause of issues considering you bought second hand  The Tetratec filter are reliable for at least the 4.5 years they've been on the market if well cared for. Like any other filter though, abuse or miss-use it and you will have a premature failure

All the best
