? :) :) :)

Yeah, definitely the bottom 2. They look a lot less"manufactured" than the top ones, even if they are natural.

Did you get these off of liveAquria.com if you did they dont look like the picture.
i would say i like the second 2nd wood color better.

The difference is, the top three are mopani. That's wood that has been sand-blasted to remove all loose matter then baked to make it exceptionaly hard. It's decorative only and won't colour your water.

The bottom ones are 'bog-wood',. That's untreated wood harvested from freshwater bogs, swamps, rivers and streams. This wood contains a lot of beneficial compounds called tannins and can be used as a food source for many pleco species. It will sometimes make the water tea-coloured which actually enhances the colours of some , particularly south american species such as neons and discus.

how long does this benifical stuff last? and how long does the color last (with and without charcoal)?

I like the bog wood the best, but its best to go to a lsf and look at the stock they have to get peices you like and fit the way you want.
I have a few peices of bog wood and I like it.

I got my driftwood (or bogwood I geuss because it looks just like the stuff on the bottom) off of ebay brand new, it's good because you know exactly the piece you're buying. Just a suggestion.

I've found exactly the opposite :S

This type of Mopani discolours my water by far more than bogwood. I guess it's because bogwood comes from a bog and tannins have leached out mostly over time.

Where Mopani is clean normal harvested wood (not in touch with water other than rain or the elements) and thus leach a heck of a lot more.

ok i think i hit my lfs first to see their stock then and then if they dont have any i will buy the second, thanks, and ya how long does this color last?

Do you mean how long the tannis leach ?
It depends entirely on the piece of wood. I've had pieces leach as little as a week - and others up to 6 months. It also depends on your wood / water ratio as to how much colour you see. And if you add carbon to your filter it might absorb some of the colour too.

If the colour bothers you, you may want to soak your wood in a bucket of hot water (changed every day) for a couple of weeks before adding to your tank.
Be very careful if you chose to boil it - no more than 10 minutes or the wood might start to disintegrate and cause more problems.
