Just Looking for a bit of info i'll be getting a Jewel Trigon 190 in the next week or 2

And yes i'm looking for my new babies already :D

I know i can't overcrowd it to start off with and hopefully once it's fully matured i would like to have a few small colourful shoals of fish with perhaps some larger ones

How many fish will i be able to hold in the tank when they're fully grown

And what would be the best type of fish to get for the inititial set up as i know that corey's & Neons preffer a more mature enviroment

Been havin a lil look on the net but the only one i can seem to find are betta's cory's n neons and i ain't to keen on the betta's as the can fin nip :S

Any help greatly appreciated :D

On the front page of the forums, theres a link to the Species Index. Every commonly kept aquarium fish has an article there.

Its good to see you've done some research, have you read about cycling the tank?

As for what fish...danio's and rasbora's are pretty hardy, and rainbowfish have the same reputation - don't be put off by the fact they look drab in a fish shop, they're stunning once they get settled into a tank.

Thats worth a read. After that, do some digging and see what catches your eye as a first fish. Tempting as it is to get the tank filled up early, its worth just putting one or two varieties in to start. Reason being (one anyhow) is some of the best looking fish need a mature tank, and I've made the mistake when I first started of getting loads of hardy varieties, then getting bored of them - but not being able to add them due to the risk of overstocking.

Seen The Red Danio They look very cool indeed ! now i'll have to see what else they're compatible with :D

Got to ask how big is a shoal ? lol if i bought around 6-10 of the same kind would that class as one ? lol

Theres no official rule, but generally 5-6 is a shoal. For Danio's consider a minimum of 5.

Have a mooch and think ahead, decide how you want the tank to be. Keep in mind you want something for the top (danio's generally stay near the top and are very active,) some mid level/all over fish, and some bottom dwellers (corys corys corys corys corys corys. And something else maaaaybe.)

Most of the fun is in planning ahead. If you're not sure about fish compatability, post up on here and someone will tell you. Planning is half the fun, then rejiggling your plan when you change your mind.

lol i'm def gettin corey's for bottom of the tank my boyfriend has them in his ...just look like baby cat fish !! :D

Was him who got the idea into my head to get them lol i was going to be getting a snake but fish are far more fun :D

I'm using the think ish community creator see which ones match and which dont

this is going to be fun :D lol

Oh and also the tank i'm getting comes with a filter but i've read reviews that they're a bit pants but also has an external one... my boyfriend has an external one and he says that it's great ...Would i be better to use the external rather than the one supplied ?

i thought it would be as the external one has been used so therefor there is going to be a build up of bacteria etc in the filter already....And no there was no diseases or anythign in the tank my grnada just couldn't maintain it anymore so he said i could have the tank so the filter has been used in that tank before :D lol

If you're going to move the filter straight across then yep, you're fine - instant cycle.

The community creator is alright but use it as an extra tool, rather than relying on it - and always post up on here intended additions you aren't 100% sure about :)

I never knew there were so many diffrent species of fish ! :o

This is going to be soooo much fun ...Can't wait to get tank set up ...I'm going to go snap crazy :D lol

thinkfish community creater has the wrong fish sizes.. i put my 125L on and it said angelfish were smaller than they are

i cant remember!!

Thinkfish says they adjust the size in the calculator to account for waste production. They say neon tetras are something like half their actual size, which might be reasonable for how small bodied they are. They've got some questionable values, though, personally I'm more put off by the ridiculous stocking levels they suggest. Maybe I could stabilize my tank with the ~3 inches per gallon their calculator says it'll take, but if I so much as sneeze near the tank, it'll crash.

Like I say people, its a guide - not an exact rule. It tries to make a more accurate way of stocking the tank than the inch per gallon rule, and does state (particularly with cichlids and bigger fish) that you need to do additional research and cannot entirely rely upon the CC.

My opinion is to slowly add fish, give the tank time to mature and ask on here if in doubt. That also gives you time to do your research properly.

One recommendation that I would make is... start touring the LFS in your area to see what is and what is not commonly available. Also check to see which places can do custom orders for you. There are a LOT of very interesting fish out there that you might not be able to just go out to the store and purchase right away.

Another point of caution: be careful about combining small fish with larger ones. Often times, if one fish can get it's mouth around another fish...the smaller fish can become food.

Great advice

i thiink i'm generally going to go for shoals of small - med fish with one or 2 med fish that like to live alone

Tank comes on tues so will get set up there n then n leave to run to make sure everything works no leaks etc

Going to go round local shops n see what they have to offer . i know there is one near by that my grandad used to use when he had the tank ..He had some gorgeous fish in there and as far as i know they ordered his discus in for him .

He said he'd buy me some as a gift but i'm a bit :S as i know they can grow bloody massive and i don't know how they'd look in the tank

I think i'm going to get some Platy's or Molly's when i first go just to see how they settle in the tank ..Not to keen on them as they breed like rabbits but they'll do to make sure tank is set up correctly and that levels etc are ok for the rest of ma babies :D

My list so far is as follows

Coolie Loach - 1
Platy - 4/6
Emperor Tetra - 3
Columbian Red Fin - 4
Rosy Barb - 3
Galaxy Rasbora - 6
Corydoras - 5/6

And just a wee note so no head nipping from anyone :D They will NOT all be going at the same time (platty or molly's firt )

i know it seems a lot of fish but bear in mind it's a 50Gallon tank so even using the 1 gall - 1 fish rule i've still got plenty of room :D

what do you's think of the mix of fish ? Will there be any probs with fighting etc ?

It's 1 gallon - 1 inch of fish, not 1 fish. Still looks ok. At a glance, the Columbian red fin tetras get I think 4 inches? Galaxy rasboras are minute, I'd be worried about them getting eaten.

Could do to add some more kuhlis, too. They're much more active and playful in bigger groups.

It says on a few sites that it's about 7cm that the Red Fin grows to So if my maths is right that just under 3 inches

may get a another Kuhli as well but don't wanna overcrowd the bottom as the cory's will be there too

I'm wanting some really bright fish too was looking at the red danio's ...Anyone know where i can get them ? I'm in scotland not to keen to get them shipped over form elsewhere

I like to see what the fish look like in the sellers tank see how it's set up etc :D

Or does anyone know any other brightly colored fish ...Except guppies or live breeders ...Not interested in breeding at the mo just more stress in my eyes! lol
