I am aware this thread is available...http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=38840

HOWEVER I can't see the pictures at work (I can occasionally see pictures and other times I can't).

Can someone direct me to where in the UK I can buy 'pure ammonia' for cycling (and include a picture (or a link to a picture)).

Thanks :)

Sorry, I know I'm not helping with the picture part of the question, but...

Boots, Homebase, B&Q, Boots Online..

seem to be the popular UK places to find it lately.

I bought some from boots chemists maybe a week a ago for £1.85ish

I can't get you the picture of it as the bottle is at my girlfriends, however it just says Household Ammonia, and on the ingredients list it only states that there is 9.5% ammonia same ingredients as the homebase bottle. However I CAN CONFIRM it does NOT froth when you shake it vigorously. I can also confirm that breathing in a good whiff of it can make you feel alive!

I went into the shop and went to the counter at the back with the chemist woman (who does the prescriptions and asked for ammonia) the woman at the front for cosmetics had no clue.

Thats ok, someone above posted the picture. I went to Boots yesterday but they didn't have any in (I was told to go to a bigger store - that store I went to was HUGE, there are another two bigger stores close by too).

I did buy some stuff yesterday; don’t know if it’s the right stuff or not (if it’s not then no worries).

The bottle says Ingredients: contains less that 5% chlorine based bleaching agent and disinfectant (sodium hypochlorite).

That's bleach, not ammonia, not the right stuff.

I got some Jeyes Kleen Off ammonia, multi-purpose household cleaner. It was in my small local diy shop. The bottle doesn't give the ingredients so I emailed them to find out and they said "Our Kleenoff Ammonia is 9.5% Ammonia & the rest is water".

Thats fine, I thought it was bleach (it was really cheap so I thought I'll get it, and if not then it can be used as bleach :)).

I'll try the larger Boots stores next time :).

Funny, the store I got it from was tiny. Was little a small village store, you can always order it online. I've heard teh Homebase ammonia is hit or miss whether it foams or not. If it foams its completely useless however you can see the liquid through the bottle so you can always hold it up to the light.

I'd just keep trying with the boots approach, you will find a store. Go on their site and look for a store nearby you, phone up and ask about ammonia and then if they straight away say no ask to speak to someone else in the store, the pharmacist or someone. Then ask them!

i have cycled around 15 tanks using the hombase ammonia and never had any that has foamed before and every tank has cycled within 3 weeks most within 2

Give me some time and I'll hopefully find the topic that was here a week about about homebase ammonia. Someone had recommended to buy it and it turned out to be frothy yet the bottle was identical. Then someone else confirmed it, however a few more people had said like yourself it worked perfectly. Finally I have never seen any problems with the Boots ammonia so I would always prefer to recommend that one first!

Sorry can't find the post, you'll just have to trust me on this one. If you go to get the Homebase ammonia hold the white bottle up to a bright light and shake vigorously you should be able to see if any bubbles form, if bubbles form into a froth... bad news. If its just a bubble or two and they pop more or less instantly then it should be fine! Like I said though, hit or miss with the Homebase according to the previous topic I was talking about.

not all boots stock the ammonia, a smaller store I went to first did not have it but the bigger store I went to did and I can say that the boots one worked for me fine.
