Wke up this moning to find what looked like a dead betta in my 55. This was eventually expected and all, so as I went to grab the net, I looked at the betta floating at the top of the water, and it had no eyes! Or so I thought. It was still squirming around, and I got it into a QT bowl with the same tankwater as the 55. It's eyes are very cloudy at the tops, somewhat faded black at the "pupil" and then very cloudy white/gray , and it rolls onto its side.It also has completely shredded up fins.... For that I thougnt caught in the filter or got into a huge fight. It was just perfect last night, what could have caused something like this?

EDIT: my troubles have combined, my BGK id exhibiting signs of being OD'd... just layiing on it's side... certainly not like it! Should I just do a very large water change and treat with 1/2 or so meds? I'm afraid to put it into the 55 because I believe the bettas would rip it apart.

Sounds like cloudy eye, often related to pop eye and is a bacterial infection. Its posible the female got into a fight with the others, for now i would seperate the fish and treat it with an anti bacterial med like Pimafix for the eyes and fin damage with regular water changes. Have you seen any agression between the females recently?

Can you test the tank for ammonia, nitrites and nitrate stats? What are the temps in the two tanks?

Would tetracycline work med-wise? I'm currently using it on my 90 gallon for a green severum who has pop eye, and I've got a bit left over. I can not currently do water tests, but I am absolutely sure the water is pristine, because I had to move both bio-wheels from the 90 into the 55, so I'm pretty positive there's no ammonia or nItrite. There hasn't been any real fighting, actually, we've gotten along real well after the first three or four days.

EDIT: the bowl and the 55 are both at 80F, but the bowl will probably drop down to room temp. about 74 to 76 throughout the day.

I've never used tetracycline so cannot say, Pimafix in my experience would be best though for treating the cloudy eye and fin damage in one go though  . Big temp fluctuations can be stressful for fish, so i would try and keep the bowl somewhere where the temp will stay most stable, either that, or get a heater in the bowl if you can find one small enough.
If there's been fighting between the female bettas, i would try and change the tank decor around and add lots of seperate densely planted area's in the tank to help them establish territories with clearer boundaries and more stable pecking order- the extra planting will also offer more places for picked on females to retreat to where they had enough. Adding more females may also help so the agression between them is more dispersed :good: .

When I walked into my room... she was gone... :-( :rip: could cloudy eye possibly kill something that quickly?!? I figured it was one of the less hazardous illnesses...

I'm sorry for your loss, cloudy eye isn't that lethal that quickly, i would put her death down to stress instead from her injuries particually is the fin damage was due to fin nipping from the other females.

Sorry R.I.P.
