Hello

I have 3 Red Wag Platys. 2 female and 1 male. I've had them for about 6 weeks now. I don't know how old they are as I got them from LFS but they are 3-4cm long.

Anyway, my male has absolutely no interest in either of my females. The only fish he pays any attention to is my male rainbow fish. Seriously he chases him around the tank and I'm sure he is trying to mate with him. Why doesn't he like my females??? Is he too young do you think?

Should buy another male and female (or 2)? I'm despirate for fry!!

Cindy

If they are only young you will have to give them time to mature and get into condition for breeding. I wouldn't go buy any more just because you are desperate for fry, let nature take its course. They are platys so you will get fry eventually but you cant hurry these things along.

Thank you Malakye

If I'm honest I wouldn't be buying more just to get fry. I have just upgraded my tank and only have 2 rainbows, 3 tetras, 2 plecs and my 3 Red Wags in there so it is looking pretty bare and I will eventually be buying more fish anyway. As you think everything is ok I will probably increase my tetras to 6 in the next couple of weeks and see how my platys are doing after christmas.

In your experience, how old are they on average before they are mature enough to breed?

If you up the numbers of tetras and rainbows, you will never need to see any fry from those platies. I never find fry from the platies in my community tank even though I know they breed constantly. They are probably already breeding but you may not see a platy ready to deliver for a few more weeks.

my own bred platy (the first ones) are just coming past 4 months of age and have started breeding. they are about half the size of my adult ones.

dont rush nature, it will happen :)

they can breed from a young age but they can all mature at different rates well at least thats what i have found.
