ok so i just got a box for my female platy that is pregnant, and i dont know when i should put her in. i've heard that she may abort if it's too soon. need help, it's my first pregnancy with platies!

In my own experience, I would wait until she starts to drop the fry and then either rescue the fry to the box or put her in for the rest of the drop.

how do i know when she is close to giving birth. she has a gravid spot but i can't tell if there are eyes because she is too shiny in light.

When she starts to drop.....so in otherwords you have to be observing quite a bit. If not put her in a day or two and see how you get on

Before a drop a typical platy will take on a boxy look, hide away from the other fish, may spend a lot of time in one place like near the gravel in a corner or next to a heater, even behind it. She may or may not feed well so that is a poor way to judge and I never see a gravid spot on my livebearers because mine have colored skin, not transparent. I go by shape, not size or color, when I want to know if they are getting close.
