When do colours show?

Hi, I have a female red empress which is about 4 ins and I bought another red empress 2 weeks ago which I'm hoping will be male. It is about 1 and half ins at the moment, it's face seems to be quite dark and I noticed a slight red tinge under the anal fin, is it too early to say or do you think it could be male?
