When Cleaning Sand?

i have just changed from gravel to sand and i just wondered when i clean it do i just hoover over the top and pick up all the dirt or do i dig the syphon into the sand?

Just gently swirl your syphon about an inch above the sand to "kick up" any debris and then it will get hoovered up
