Hi all,
I bought a Betta from a market on the weekend. I know I shouldn't support these people selling Bettas in tiny unheated tanks, but I couldn't help myself. Anyway, the people I bought the fish from told me to use filtered tap water, and no ager. I actually did this for a day while I had the Betta in a temporary bowl while I was setting up his new tank, and he seemed o.k. You couldn't smell chlorine in the water like you can with my normal tape water. Just wondering if other people do this? Seeing as they were giving out what I believed to be misinformation about how to care for Bettas, I thought I'd check with some people in the know before trying the filtered water without ager (dechlorinator) in my tanks.

I think filtered water is fine, without added dechlorinator.
I use tap water, & then dechlorinator of course; but I know people with Bettas who use just filtered water, & their Bettas have been just fine. ;)
I just like using dechlorinator because it's good just to be safe!
My old friend never used dechlorinator; just straight from the tap & her Bettas never lasted long. :(

I always age my water, at least a day or so. But I have 3 tanks so I usually have around 10 to 12 gallons of water thats sitting so i can use it for any of the tanks. So my bettas are always getting aged water thats been dechlorinated as well as aged.
but at the same time I have a neighbor who has two 150 gallon tanks and he just adds water straight from the tap, but then again its a much smaller percentage than with a smaller tank, so who knows. For a couple bucks you can get a bottle of API dechlor that treats more than 2000 gallons of water so theres really no excuse not to play it safe in my eyes.

I'd never use water with chlorine in it. At the moment I'm using tap water with ager, but I'm wondering if filtered water would be good as you don't have to use chemicals. I guess I could try it and see how I go.

At school I age and add dechlorinator just to be safe =P. At home I use water straight from the tap without dechlorinator, aging, or filter. But thats just because I have well water. My bettas are happy, both at home and school.

I thought I'd use some filtered water today, when doing a water change on my tanks, but realised the filtered water isn't heated, so I can't really use it. Doh! I don't want to put it in the microwave or anything to warm it up, so I guess I'll stick with the tap water and ager.

Thanks for your replies everyone!
