70 gallon community tank, same issues as last time, out of all of my fish (about 70 small tetras and barbs) only about 5 of my red eyes looks like this. they have big white patches on the top (and sometimes side) of their noses, one of which has lost the white patches but the skin turned black. i dosed ich x at first, then kanaplex thinking it was mouth rot, but neither have helped. can anyone identify this issue? and if so, whats the fix? it’s been about a week maybe a week and a half, and it hasn’t spread outside of the 6/10 red eyes infected, and no other fish is infected.

The pictures are not clear enough sadly, but your description strongly suggest Cotton Wool Disease Flexibacter columnaris...But Only you can see if it compares with what your fish have.

if it's the case Kanaplex had good chances to do. but it need a solid course and good concentration to work.

i dosed it for 3 days but ran out so i had to order more, how long would you think until it clears up?

i also just notice that all the white spots are gone but 2 of them have had their nose turn black, they should be fine though i’d assume?

Have you took the time searched for pictures of tetras infected with columnaris and compared to what your fish have ? first

Yes, the darker spots can be healing skin. And If white spots are falling is a very good sign.

Continue the Kanaplex course following instruction, keep close observation on the healing parts to make sure it is for real and not necrosis.

unfortunately there aren’t many pictures but from what i found it does look like it is columnaris. the only thing i’m confused about is the fact it’s barley spread and hasn’t killed anything yet, i guess a sign the kanaplex is working?

Now that is a very good question, from my limited medical knowledge and understanding, there are 2 things that are prevalent...

Some species of fish are more subjected to catch some flavobacterium columnare strains.

There are at least four major strains of flavobacterium columnare.

Maybe the fact that you acted early contributed to help a lot.

It mean that some species of fish could need a higher exposition before getting ill, or even that they wont even be touched. But some tetra are more subjected to some strains than other species.

Once the infection clears out, do major water changes for a while rinse your filter media and vacuum as much as you can to get the concentration of pathogen in the water to nearly non existent.

cross your fingers it never comes back.
