Hello,

One of my platys has lost her appetite & isn't swimming much, she's been like this almost 3 days now. I haven't done anything different with the tank and she is one of my babies so she has been used to the tank etc since she was born, she's about 7 months now.
When I was looking at her i also noticed her skin/scales look strange, like jagged/spiky, hard to describe

Does anyone know what might be wrong with her? (All my other platys, adults & babies are their usual lively selves)

This is called pineconing or dropsy and is a symptom of underlying disease/sickness. Are there any other symptoms, like scratching itself off objects, or any fungus, white stringy poop, etc..?
If you want to save the fish it's best is to isolate in a quarantine tank(or a bucket with a cycled filter heater maybe depending on room temperature) and treat with internal antibacterial meds or broad spectrum antibiotic. It could be also parasite related but fish tend to have caved in stomach or scratch themselves if that's the case. It's hard to tell and I could be way off the truth but that's my general logic. Platies will also tolerate some aquarium salt in the water which can help with that if the meds allow it. Make sure the quarantine tank is well oxygenated.

I believe Snazy is right in that your fish has dropsy, which is a very serious condition, basically the internal organs have failed, and the fish is unable to regulate the amount of water within their bodies, hence they swell right up, causing the scales to stand on end.

In the vast majority of cases, the condition is fatal. You could try placing the fish in an epsom salt bath for 20 minutes to try to draw out the fluid, but it's a long shot.

Thank you both.
There aren't any other symptoms, she's just not eating or swimming and the better description from The_lock_man of her scales standing on end. Sounds like it is dropsy then, the_lock_man you mentioned their bodies swell up and I think this may have happened, I was looking at her and I thought she looked bloated, I was trying to figure out if maybe she was pregnant but dropsy seems more likely now (
I put her in a separate tank straightaway and will try your suggestion of the salt bath (googling more about dropsy now)
Thanks again!!

There's no point googling about dropsy because this in itself is not a disease. You need a course of strong internal meds if you want to try to save it. I believe some people have if caught in an early age. The problem is it's hard to know if its parasitic or bacterial and what type exactly because certain meds are good against certain diseases, not a miracle cure all.
