i have a marineland HOB hot magnum canister filter for a 55 gallon.and it doesnt seem to like to push out a lot of water.actually right now,it has a trickle not even a current.it seems to work great when i clean it and fill it up.
it seems though that it wont hold water in the canister.it starts full when i put it back on and then in a half hour, theres about 3-6 inches of water left

The intake pipe might have a leak in part of the tube or a joint that may be allowing air to be sucked in instead of water causing the water flow to dwindle. Try tightening the pipes and if it still doesn't work, then take the pipe out and test for leaks by turning upsidedown and fill it up with water from the tap.

If you find nothing wrong with the intake, then check to make sure the motor is working right.... spinning evenly with no acceleration or deceleration and is creating a strong suction.

After that...I'm clueless  I guess just buy a new filter?

EDIT (Addition): Check the floor behind the tank...is there water? cause if there is then the seal between the motor and the body of the filter is poor and you could possibly plug it up with silicone or just go buy a new filter.

P.S. Sorry to say that last piece, I don't mean to act like your an idiot, but I didn't have my motor all the way in when I first set up my tank and it had a slight leak and showed alot of the symptoms you describe.
