Here's a pic of my gourami of a few years... As you can see something is eating away at the bottom fin. It started off really small but its continuing. Only other fish in my tank is also a gourami but they don't bite or fight with each other, which im positive about. What is going on and what can I do if anything to treat my fish. "note" the white part under the fin is just a reflection.

 That's odd. I've never seen fin rot like that before. I'm more of a plant person, but I can say that's it might be of a bacterial nature and you're defenitely going to need to get some meds. Is that black blotch part of the fish's color? Whatever it is it looks nasty. I hope someone's along to help you soon.

That gap you see use to be all fin.. now its just a gap and the black part is what keeps moving up toward the body of my fish.

Its been going on for a quite awhile now months actually... I was using a liquid med that treats fin/tail rot, open wounds, damaged fins/tail etc Malafix was the medication I was using.

Its definatly a fin rot of some sort, but the black coloring is very unusual- when finrot is left untreated for a long period of time and it progresses down to the base of the fin, it starts to get into the bloodstream making the affected area inflamed looking and a secondary infection takes place...Fish do not usually live long after it has progressed to the base of the fin.

I would treat the fish with some anti bacterial finrot meds and also for external bacteria although i'll do some research for you and see if the black markings can be explained otherwise  .

I have never seen anything like this before. I would get some maracyn quick they have a disease chart. mabey they might be something on the chart showing what that is. I will look and research the net and see if I can find out what is the matter. That looks awful. I hope it gets better. I was wondering if mabey it should be treated with a gram positive and a gram negitave medicine???like maracyn 1 & 2 ? what do you think (Tokis-Phoenix).

I agree Maracyn 1 and 2 may be worth it as they cover a whole range of fungal/finrot type deseases...Its still very unusual though, the black marking that is -_-

Thanks very much for the feed back and help you guys. It means alot to me. In the picture it does look awfully black.. but as I look at my fish today its more a light brownish color. What do you think I should treat the fish with. I used malafix when I first noticed this. So maracyn is my next option..?

Hi LS1MONSTER :)

If you use Maracyn, by all means use both 1 and 2 together. Or, you could try tetracycline or kanamycin.

You might also want to try giving it salt dips. To do this, I use a measuring teaspoon of aquarium salt to 1 to 2 cups of aquarium water. Dissolve the salt completely before adding the fish. You could leave him in there 20 minutes or so and then return him to the medicated tank. It's OK to do this up to 6 times a day.

Using the salt dip treatment is sometimes a little nerve wracking, but often effective, especially for a wound like your fish has. If he faints and rolls over during the treatment (which he might do the first few times) just return him to the tank and he will revive. As he gets better, he will tolerate longer treatments.

I hope he recovers quickly.

Inchworm thanks for adivce. I just got back from the store with some Maracyn. I didn't know I needed Maracyn 2. I don't have a hopistal tank and my other Gourami is doing just fine and even the one in the picture shown is swiming around normal. So in goes the first tablet..

macaryn most def! are you sure he didnt get a chunck of his body ripped off?? thats what it looks like :/ anywho good luck , and i hope he pulls through :)
